The Chest was a small one, about 30 inches high, by about 13 or 20 inches in breadth and depth, and was pla, ced on a block of wood about: a foot in thickness, so as to elevate it about that height from the ground; several books and newspapers were deposited inside.Of it, in the manner in which Merchants and others would usually place hem—a large quantity of light pine woodlalabs from an adjoining Saw Mill,] was then --placed around and above itond the fire kindled on the-windward side, ,! so as to drive the flame. against the back part of the chest.'
