pamphlet, sug4estinga new plan of Fire
Insurance.. Re.,l'prePoses that the city
shall assume the whole business of Fire
Insurance, and perhaps Life Insutance,
and with the profits thereof, over and a—
bove the losses, pay title city expenses.
The writer is quite sanguine that the pro.
posed plan would be beneficial to the city,
and aff)rd greater security to the insured.
The plan is an enlarged and general
application of the mutual Insurance-prin
ciple,. which is now so much in the public
favor, and it . proposes to make the whole
property of the city, ivhich according to
the Assessors last returns, amounts to
$106,000.000, the capital to insure against
As to the feasibility of the project, the
water shows by the returns of Insurance,
companies to the legislature, for the year
1841, that the amount of fire lossies paid
the preceding year wls only $1:05.000,
while the amount•of their premiums on
$,50,268,858 of fire risks then undeter
niined, was over $328,000.
The pamphlet states that in a few weeks,
-the Mayor will call on the citizens at a
pnblie meeting, to give their votes for or
against the proposed measure.
-Another Death—Cause, Rum.—A man
in Pike co. Ark. has lost his life ima rather
curious wiy. He had been drinking pret
ty freely, and thi ust his Bowe Itnifo, with
in a sheath, into his saddle bags. The
knife cut through the saddle bags, and
pierced the artery of his leg, which caus
ed him to bleed to death. Aroused to a
sense of his situation, and out of the reach
of help, he had scrambled to a pool of wa-:
ter, where he was afterwards found dead.
