Mr. JOHN DENNING:—Dear Sir--Havibg been present, yrsterday, at the experiment which you were pleased to make, in the presence of a number of our business men, of the safety of )ottr IRON CHESTS, in case of fire, it gives me pleasure to say, that so far as I was capable of judging, the test was fair, and the result exceeded my expectations. The Chest was a small one, about 30 fnclies high, by about 18 of 20 inches in breadth and depth, and was pla• ced on a block of wood about a foot in thickness, so . as to elevate it about that height from the ground; several books and newspapers were deposited inside of it, in the manner in which Merchants and others would usually place thetn—a large quantity of light pine wood [slabs from an adjoining Saw Mill,] was then placed around and above it, and the fire kindled on the windward side, so as to drive the flame against the back part of the e chest. The tire was kept.Up about three quarters of a hour, until you had gone among the spectators anti received from Orem their universal answer that the test was sufficient. The chest was then drawn out of the fire, and confect, and opened, and examined. The contents were ail safe, and the only injury done was to the back of one book which appeared to be a little cliarred. F ruin what I witnessed, I think that these chests are desery trig or confidence, as affording, perhaps, the hest security to Merchants for their hooks and papers, which they can have wlthout building large, thick, and expen, ive vaults.
