victory is therefore the more valuable, and

Maryland Election.

egates 43 Democrats and 24 Whigs.
Senate —S Democrats and 12 Whigs—
a Democratic gain so fat of two.
The Legislature is composed oftwenty
one Senators and eighty-two Delegates.
Fifty-tWo is a majority on joint ballot.—
From tie returns above, it will be seen
that the Democrats have already elected
forty three Delegates and eight Senaters—
making, together, fifty-one, lacking only
one of a majority.
The Legislature last year was composed
of 52 Whigs and 48 Democrats, so that if
we do dirt get one inure, we have still made
a Democratic gain of three in tiro Leg Ida-
Lure.

One of the Only two uniform whigs that

most shamefully by the treachery , of the
antimasons. A few days previous to the
election they circulated handbills through
the county, charging him with having tai•
ken _part in the whig movement of 1841,
and calling on the party to oppose - him.
They aeclared that fur this indiscretion he
should be defeated, and they kept their
promise, for many of them electioneered

so much nonsense. How discordant is
this with our own democretid feelings and
principles; how unlike a simple visit of our
Chief Magistrate among the people.—
There are millions of pound sterling year

pomp and useless show, while nearly one
third of the. Queen's subjects, suffer for

Operation of the Bankrupt Law.
The Hartford Times states the following
instance of the operation of the Ilanlirupt
law as only nne of many cases: "Passing
through a neigihboring town a few days
since, we noticed a peculiarly neat dwelling
by the roadside, which, with the grocnds
and ornaments connected with it, presented
a co qtly appearance. On inquiry, we found
that it WAS occupied :by a gentleman who
had recentiy taken the benefit of the bank
rupt act; lie did not, before petitioning. pre-,
tend to owe, though the precise situation
