DR. FRANKLIN SAYS:
"All acute fevers ever require some evacuation to bring
them to a perfect crisis and solution, and that even by
stools, which must he promoted by art when nature
does nut do the business itself. On this account, an
ill timed scrupolousnessabout the weaknes. of the body
Is of bad consequences; for it is that which seems chiefly
to make evacuations necessary, which nature attempts
after toe humors are fit to be expelled , is not able to
accomplish for the most part in these diseases; and I can
affirm, that I have alien a purge when the !Aft has been
so ',twillsl it could hardly be felt, and the debility ex.

it." The good effeel to be derived from the Braudreth

their timely use neither the scarlet, the typhus fever or

To appreciate to :he full extent ,the incalculable bene

the First Symptoms 01 Disease present themselves. One

Mr. lons Dessnm—Dsar Sir --Having been present,
yesterday, at the experiment which you were pleased to
make, in the presence or n number of our business men,
Of the safety of your I ROtetH EsTs, in case of fire, it
gives nue pleasure to say, that_so far as I was cable of
judging, the test was fair, and the result exceed p e a d. my
expectations.
The Chest was a small one, about 30 inches high, by
about 18 or 20 inches in breadth and depth, andilffia pla
ced On a block of wood about g foot in thickness, so as
to elevate it about that height from the ground; several
books and newspapers were deposited inside of it, in the
manner in which Merchants and others would usually
place them--a large quantity of light pine wood [slabs
from an adjoining Saw was then placed around
and above_ it, and the fire kindled ou the windward side,
so as to drive the flame against the back part of the chest.
The fire was kept up about three quarters of tan hour,
until you hail gone among the spectators and received
from them their universal answer that the test MIS
sufficient. The chest was then drawn out of the Are,
and cooled, and opened, and examined. The contents
were alt safe, and the only injury done was tothe hack
iof one book which appeared to he a little charred. From
what I witnessed, I think that these chests are Ilesery
ing of confidence, ns affording, perhaps, the best security
to Merchants for their books and papers, which they can
have without building large, thick, and expensive vaults.
I would consider them a better sec.irit y than many vaults
which 1 have seen built. Your triiil.
5.% Itti EL CHURCH.
We concur in the above statement, having been pros
sent when the chest was testes'.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA—MEDICAL D...
P A RTMENT.—The plan of instruction in this de.
pa rt mem of the Universityipresents peculiarities not to be
found in no other School of Medicine In thelUnion. The
Lectures commence on the firsts( October,- and termi
nate on the 4th of July ensuing.
Owing to the length of the session, which embraces a
period of nine months, three Professors are enabled to
perform all the duties which in other medical institutions
are usually assigned to six; and the students are seldom
required to attend more than two lento es on the same
day. By this arrangement, the students have an oppor
'unity ofbeing well grouneed in Anatomy, Physiology,
and other elementary branches of Medical Science, lie
fore they investigate thtir applications in connection
ith the study of the practice of Medicine and Surgery.
Immediately before each lecture, the studentsare sub
jected to a full and and/igid examination on the prece
ceding lecture,or on portions of approved text books. It
is apparent, that the plan, of which the outlines have
been briefly stated, is one which allows the student to
commence as welt as to complete hisrnedical studies in - the
institution; and presentee happy combination of the ad
vantages of the system of instruction by private PO'
age and that of public lectures.
