yesterday, at the experiment which you were pleased to
make, in the presence of a number of our business men,

me pleasure to say, that so far as I waseapable of
Judging, the lest was fair, and the result exceeded my
expectations.
The Chest was a small one, about 30 inches high, by
*aotit 18 or 20 inches in breadth and depth, and was pla
ced on a block of wood about a at in .thickness, so as
to elevate it about that height from the ground; several
books and newspapers were deposited inside of it, in the
manner in which Merchants and others would usually
place them—a large quantity of light pine wood Naha
from an adjoining Saw was then placed around
and above it, and the fire kindled on the windward 'side,

The fire was kept up about three qu
until you had gone among the spectators and received
from them their universal answer that the test was
sufficient. The chest wasthen drawn out of the fire,

were all safe, and the only injury done was to the back
of one hook which appeared to he a little coarred. From
what I witnessed, I think that these chests are desery
rig of con fi dence, as affording, perhadis,the best security
to Merchants for their books and papers, which they can
have without building large, thick, and expensive vaults.
I would consider them a better sec.trity than many vaults

found in no oilier School of Medicine in thelUnion. The
Lectures commence on the first of October, and termi
nate on the 4th of July ensuing.
Owing to the length of the session, which embraces a
period of nine months, three Professors are enabled to
perform all the duties which in other medical institutions
are usually assigned to six; and the students are seldom
required to attend more than Iwo leolu es on the same
day. By this arrangement, the students have anoppor
tunity of being well grounded in Anatomy, Physiology,
and other elementary branches of Medical Science, lie
" fore they investigate their applications in connection
with the study of the practice of Medicine and Surgery
Immediately before each lecture, the st totems are sub
jected to a full and and rigid examination on the prece
ceding lecture,or on portions of approved text books. It
is apparent. that the plan, of which the outlines have
