Soldier Shot.-Gn Saturday evening, about
eight o clock, a soldier, named Thomas Farley
was shot by a membgr of the Provost guard, un
der the following circumstances : Farley, who
is a returned veteran, re-enlisted. on Friday af
ternoon for another term ot service, and until
Saturday was kept under guard at the guard
house. On Saturday, however, he obtained
permission logo out into the city, and was giv
en in charge to Sergeant lohn Cooley, a mem
ber of the Frovost guard. The men behaved
amicably towards each other, and drank freely
together until they both became partially Intox
icated. When on St. Clair street, we are in
foraed that Farley expressed a desire to go over
to Allegheny, where he formerly reaided, but to
this the Sergeant dtu not wish to accede, and in
flated on returning to the Girard House. Far
ey, however persisted io his sequent, and as an
inducement offered to the Sergeant' twenty dol
lars to let him go over. The Sergeant, it appears

Farley wished to bribe him, an altercation oc
curred between the parties, when.lt 1, alleged,
Farley struck the Sergeant, and aliempted to

man wasconveyed to a store in the vicinity, and
medical aid was summoned, when his case was
pronounced hopeless. Sergeant Cooley surren
dered himself to Alderman Donaldson, without
attemptlngto escape or deny the shooting. Far
ley was then conveyed to the Girard House
where he was properly cared for. Cooley was
conveyed 1 0 the watch-house, and had a hearing
yesterday morning. His statement does not dif
fer materially from the above. He was commit
tea to jail for further hearing.

Sentence of Marttu Brawdy.-Martin
Hrawdy. Jr., convicted of manslaughter In Tril

in the Western Penitentiary for a term of nine
year, and six month.. On heartngthe eentenco
joung Brawdy was evidently shocked. and

sentence waa read. He had been led to suppose
