Hebei Reports of Sherman.
N&vr } obk, Dec. 9.-The recent pro
ceedingsin the South Carolina Legisla
ture look very much as though that
state, in consistency with her ingrained
secession doctrines, was about to secede
from the empire of Jeff. Davis. Reso
lutions have been introduced in that
body denouncing, as unconstitutional,
Davw propositions •to emancipate the
slaves, and abridge the freedom of the
press, declaring that the States are not
amenable to the Richmond'Qovernment
and advising the other States not to sub-’
nut to its usurpations.
The Richmond Ditpalc/t of the 6th
says that General Sherman seems to be
becoming more timid or more exhaust -
led. For five days, up to last Friday,
he made only {five miles per day. He

pected at Savannah on the 26th ult

point threw up signal rockets for his
guidlance.
The Richmond papers say Grant is
massing on the extreme right of the
Army of the James, and attacks by him
Uiere and by the left of tie army of the
rotomac, were expected.
The Richmond Whig of the 6th says:
We hare reason ro believe, from all we
can learn, that Sherman’s army had
united, and is now marching with meas
ured pace toward the coast, north or
southwest of Milieu. We have also
reason to anticipate a battle at some
point north or northwest of Savannah
™, , L c,oae of lhe Present week.
the Richmond Enquirer of the 6th
says: We learn that an official telegram
was received last night, stating that

cient reasons, is not given of'this tight
It occurred last Sunday morning. One
corps ol the enemy and Kilpatrick’s
cavalry attacked Wheeler in ‘a strong
position. They came up boldly to the
attack, and made several chargis, all of
which were repulsed by Wheeler’s men
who, although largely outnumbered’
maintained their ground and cut down
the foe. A telegraphic disoatch states
that the enemy lost heavily, and it was
