The first sensation L usually a feeling of dry

freely, as the nose become. stopped up, some
times on one side and sometimes on the other.
Soon a clear, watery, acrid discharge makes
its appsarinmeTexconating the nostrils and edges
of alines; which become red and somewhat
swollen. Alter a few .days the discharge be
comes thick, yellowish, extremely frequent, and
continues to be a marked feature of the digests!,
and a source of much' danger and the greatest
annoyance. After more or less time it becomes
purulent, Wilily ontinsfve, and assumes an ex
tremely fetid odor. It Is usually so profuse as
to require, when confined to the woo° the Its quent appli cation or the handkerchief, orlf

the case, while the body is in a, horizontal pouf.

incrustations produces a feeling of discomfort,

that side of the anti natation which adhered to
the mucous membrane will sometimes be found
bloody, a fact which explains the force required
for its , suslodgement. During sleep these in-''
crustations accumulate more rapidly, and the
feeling is therefore most uncomfortable In the
morning; sometimes all efforts to clear the
throat are futile until atter breakfast, or scone

Some patients state that they are not suc
cessful until they have swallowed some whi.ky
or brandy. The discharge, which to at first
without smell, assumes in the progress of the
complaint an exceseively fetid odor ; the breath
