Prices.—The prices of all the nessessaries of
life still continue very high, and it Is astonish
ing to come how people are wiffing to pay such
enormous prices while the supply in thetaarket
is so large. The supply of vegetables tn the mar
ket this year Is, to say the least, not below the
average of any of the past years; yet, except in
'a few instances, the prices paid for them are ut
terly unreasonable and out of all proportion.
Butter cannot be had at less than fifty cents per
pOtind, and this price has been dernsinded Belong
for this article that the community have now
become accustomed to it and think no more
about It. But certainly this prleels exorbitant,
and those who are able to sell at audit:rates as
these must reap enormous profits. But who is
responsible far all this T It would be rather dif
ficult to determine through whose fault it is that
the people are thus cheated out of their money,'
for we can find.no other term strong enough for
these transactions- Some have been induced to
attribute it to the illegal huckstering which
they say is very prevalent in the market, and
which they say excludes the people from all
chance of dealing immediately with the produc
ers. But although this fact nightie a great
part account for the present rates of things, we
doubt whether it be the true and only cause.
• Hucksters make large profits on thecomminity,
and consequently it would be extremely desira
ble That their numbers be reduced; but even
when huckstering was not praoticed as exten
sively as they say it is at present the prices
were nearly the same. The rise in gold might
also account for it In part, but the rates demand
ed to.day for all commodities in .the market do
not differ very materially from those which the
public were formerly forted to pay for the same
things. The farmers themselves must reap Urea
profits from these transactions. They have har
vested abundant crops, and err disposing of
them at rates highly satisfactory to themselves,
but we doubt whether they are by any means
gratifying to the public. They labor under the
Impression that they can demand and obtain
what they like from their brethren in the city,
and the result shows that they are not far from
their mark. As long as the people are willing
to ply the present prices the producers will be
willing to receive them. But will the former
not see that they are justly dealt with T

In every business or profession, indeed, in
every department of science or skill, there is
always some acknowledged head—some one who
stands Out in bold relief among his fellows, aoa
sort of leader. In the study and treatment of
deafness and catarrh, as special diseases Dr. E.
B. LIGHTHILL, of this city, oecupiesjust the
position above described. He has de vat ed years
of labor to this speciality, anti Is now reaping
the reward of his industry. The editorial cni
umns of the Tribune, of a recent date, boar wit
ness to the Doctor's success in this department
of medicine. We quote the paragraph:
"Colts of s th$A.P MUM—Louis Loewine

two years old. Soon after his arrival here he
was taken sick and lest his heating. By drgrees
he became first deaf and then dumb. For nearly
ten years ha was a mute, unable to hear the
loudest voice.or to articulate a word. About
one year ago he was placed by his parents in the
hands of Irr. - Lighthill, who has so far anceeetled
In restoring to hint his Ist powers of hearing
and utterance that' he can converse with those
who speak to him dist4notly and deliberately.
During the past four or rive months he has been
under the tuition of Mr. Henneche, and has
made considerable progress in reading and arith
metic."
Having been supplied with the lad's addrest,
we further investigated the matter, and ahem -
ered that previous to calling on Dr,
the youths case was considered hopeless, and
he was for two years an inmate df a Deaf and
Dumb Asylum. The Rev. John Nett, D. D.,
Professor le Union College, Si:heneclady, in a
published letter, tenders his gratitude to Dr
I,l,ghthill tor treating successfully his case of

possesses other testimonials and tributes to bid

speak in any but terms of praise of his treat

The Camels are Coming.
A Southampton paper gives this ac
count of the shipping of a female camel
and her young one, which latily arrived
there to be sent to New York by the
Bremen mail steamer:
They were accompanied by an Aritt)
keeper. __By no contrivance could the
elder camel be induced to cross the
gangway from the dock to the ship, al
.though the Ari-b tried hy blows and by
coaxing with a bag of oats to get her on
board. The young camel—about the
size of a pony, and, covered with beau
tiful soft silky hair—stuck to his dam.
Asthe tide was about to ebb the pilot on

called out. "Have the animals shipped."
A number of the German passengers. on

and, amidst shouts of laughter, took the

The Petroleum Interest.
The petroleum interest has become a
shining light in the commercial world.
There appears to be something mar'
substantial than gas about it, and it de
cidedly grows fatter every day. A. short
time ago we gave a list of the different
companies engaged in extracting the fat
of the land from the soil of Pennsylva
nia. They represented an aggregate
capital of eighty-eight millions. An
addition to that list shows now a rep.
resentation of one hundred and sixty
millions and two hundred and thirty ,
companies, who are working, or pre
tending to work, oil farms, which are
far more profitable than grazing farms,
or grain farms, or farms under green
crops. Perhaps they resemble the latter
most, as they certainly bring in a large
crop of greenbacks; Many of these
companies are possibly bogus, and real
ly represent nothing at all; but admit
ting th'at even half of them are genuine,
it shows an• Immense addition to our
national wealth, and a vast increase to
the ranks of our newest order of aristo
cracy, an aristocracy which ought to
glide along more. smoothly than either
of those which have preceded it—the
codfish or the shoddy—for it certainly
does not want for lubricating material. A

in agony at au .annual expenditure of
eighty millions of dollars, now pay
three. times that sum in, loterest on a
public debt, which is inereailtig with
the rapidity of geometrical progression.
Twenty years ago the nation was.con
vulsed with apprehensions of a standing
army because a Secretary of War advis
ed in his report that the militia of the
several states should be enrolled and
organized by State authority, and the
Administration of which that Secretary
was a member was hurled from power
by an almost unanimous vote of the
people. Within the present decade
died the statesman who pronounced
.'upon the floor of the . &nett the funeral
sermon over the earthly remains of the
last paper currency for whith the United
States was, however so remotely respon
sible, and to-day seven hundred millions
of pape fo r, and two thousand millions of
bonds, r which the United States is di
rectly responsible,have driven coin from
the sight of the people. Taxes such as
no nation ever saw, are now imposed;
battles are fought which in their carnage
exceed the massacres of the wars when
Rome contended with barbarians whom
It was considered lawful to destroy by
any means. A civil war of the most
gigantic nature has progressed during
four years, and the people to-day are as
deeply, if not mote deeply, interested in
the result of an election in some doubt
ful county, than they are whether Hood
has killed 5,000 of Sherman's troops or
Sherman•has destroyed that number of
Hood's. Time was when a public debt
of five hundred millions would have
been accepted as proof of national bank
ruptcy; now that debt is counted by
thousands of millions, and no one seems
to think they need be any limit to that
debt. The whole manner and feelings
-of the people and their thoughts'and
habits, seem to have changed. They
do not know their actual position, nor
whither they are going. Though sur
rounded in the blackness of night, they
neither pause in their journey for the
approach of dawn nor seem to care
whether a now day ever dawns upon
them. They plunge headlong without
guide or compass, consent apparently
Iv welcome any fate that may befall
them."

Telegraph Wires Out of Order
State Claimed by Both Parties
The Vote In Gon.Grant's Army
ALAANY, Nov. 10.—There itothing
more definite here to-night as to the re-'
snit in this State. The., Democrats
claim it by a few hundrea, while the
Republicans insist they have carried it
by atleast 5,000.
The Congressional delegation from
this city stands two Abolition, two War
Democrats and two regular Democrats.
Brooks' majority is 159, Raymond's
381 and Darling's 1,082.
The Herald says New York and Penn
sylvania have both gone Republican.
The indications are that Seymour is de-'
feated. Fenton appears to have run
ahead of Lincoln in several of the inte
rior counties. Thus far McClellan has'
carried only three States, New Jersey,
Kentucky and Delaware.
The next Congress will be over
whelmingly Republican Allowing the
delegations from 'States yet to elect
members of Congress, there will be 3
more than a two-thirds Republican ma
jority on joint ballot.
In the New York Legislature there
will be 84 Republidan majority. The
State has gone Republican by 5,000' and
Pennsylvania by 15,000.
The Post says: McClellan's electoral
vote is 21 out of 249. Lincoln probably
carries every &site except New Jersey,
Delaware and Kentucky.
Thirty-eicht Pennsylvania regiments
in Grant't army give 4,700 votes for
Lincoln and 2,800 for McClellan.
The Albany Evening Journal this af—
ternoon claims a majority for Lincoln
and Fenton of from 5,000 to 7,000. The
_Argus insists that there is from 1,200 to
1,500 majority for iffcC'ellen.

The Austrian Minister Dead
NEW YORK, Nov.lo. —Nicholas Conn
De Garigi, Austrian . Minister Resider,
in America, died at Clarendon Rote
on Tuesday.
r The Herald's Fortress Monroe corres
pondent says all negotiations for the ex
change of ten thousand prisoners at he
vannah have been completed. The first
installment of rebel prisoners sailed from
Hampton Roads on Monday for Savan
nah liver, and on the.arrival there ten
thousand of our men will be received in
return.
NEW YORK, Nov. 10.—The Titnez'
Martinsburg special says: Gen. Sheri
dan has so far recovered as to brable to
ride horseback. Capt. Moore, of his
staff, is better, but not well enough to
ride.
The Poat says: The gunboat Just built
here for the Japanese is detained ander
protest from the British minister, ow
ing to the impending hostitities growing
out of the demand by the Govern—
ments of the United' States, England,
France and Holland for the opening of
the Japanese inland sea. An allied
fleet has ere this gone to force an open•
ing.
The Elegtion in Missouri
ST. Louis, November 10.—The late
storms so damaged the telegraph wires
that we have but feiv scattering returns
from the interior, but it is conceded to
Lincoln by a handsome majority, and
also the election Of the Radical State
ticket. McClnrg, Logan, Blow and
Brtyd will be returned to Congress, and
one or perhaps two other Abolition Con
gressmen are elected. The Legislature
will be largely Abolition. The conven
tion question is carried and a large ma
jority of the radical delegates are elect--
ed.
A.MHERSTIII7/143, C. W.vicliig. 10.—The
Propellor Georgian arrived here yester—
day. The Collector of'Customs reached
here but found nothing suspicious, but
he detained her until further
. orders from
the Government. The owner is very
indignant and threatens to claim dama
ges.
