"escape boat" of President Lincoln was
allowed to let off her steam. And pass
in; at one bound from despair' to arro
gance, the resened "Commander-in-
Chief" recommenced his persecution of
SfeClellan. He was again superceded.
Burnside took command; a campaign
was commenced on the plan of "Gener
al" Lincoln, and the disaster at Freder•
icksburg was the result. Burnside was
removed: Booker took command. The
military genius of LlncOin was in the as
cendant, and the disaster of the Wilder
ness followed.
Soldiers Should Vote for AlTlellaus.
The nomination of General McClellan
was a merited compliment paid to the
army—a generous recognition of the he.
row. devotion of the soldiers to Apt, coun•
try's hag. And while the Derncexacy in
:his practical manner have proved their
1 riendshi p for the brave toys who re
,-,nondeti to the bugle's call; the Repuhli ,
Cifirltarre - wrwstozest-y- --atistited.. the army
by refusing to nominate Grant, ofFitte7e
man, or Hooker, or Rosecmns„ or any
other of the brave men Who have fought
beneath our starry banner.
McClellan, in accepting the nomina
tion, raised i aloft the stars and stripes,
with the thrilling battle cry gleamhig on
its folds: "Tun UNION MUST BR PAM
SERVED AT ALL HAZARDS." Such is the
rallying cry of the Democratic party,
and will not, the gallant heroes in the
army echo back the shout, "Tau Mutat
MUST BR rausicavun AT ALL ruatia.nal"
Will ti ue-hearted soldiers be induced to
vote against a gallant comrade? For if
soldiers will not stand by each other
where can they expect to find friends?
The Sotoillere* BAlibt to Vote
When the laws of his State authorize
the soldier to vote, though absent in the
field; no officer, not even the Commah
der-in•Chief,. has a right to interfere
with his choice, And any attempt to so
interfere should be boldly resisted and
exposed,
It is the duty of the soldier to obey all
lapidary orders, but the tight to vote is
the-right of .freemen, and soldiers should
not allow themselves to be treated as
slaves.
President Lincoln has caused officers
to be dismiasixl for voting the Demo
cratic ticket, and by such acts of tyran
ny be. insulted the whole army. , Itm
my own part, I loveagood soldierwith
out regard to his politics, but I ~mold
regret to seg a brave man vote Against a
comrade.
While - in the service, I had an officer
on my staff from this city, - Captain , . Ed ;
win Saunders. For more than a• year
he was with me daily, almost, hourly.
He wag faithful and brave, and died.like
a soldier on the distant fields of Georgia.
To this moment, I do not know what
were his politics, but whether Republi
can or Democrat,"may peace rest with
his ashes—may honor rest with his
name."
McClellan and Lincoln
In what does the. position of McClel
lan differ from that of Lincoln as to the
war? McClellan says. that "the Union
must be preserved at all hazards." And
he further says that "that Union is' the
single condition of peace." According
to McClellan, if the Southern Statettwill
acknowledge the totprema-cy of the •Oon.
stitution and return to the Union, peace
will be made. But Lincoln dectarelt
that there shall be neither peace not
Union until the negro is placed uporuin
equality with the white man. n
Lincoln's first step was to make .ne
groes the comradeal of white soldierg,
and to dress them- in the same uniform,
thereby establishing .a badge of equal
ity. Andtas a second step, Henry Ward
Beecher, one of the.ablest and-most in
fluential of M. Lincoln's supporterri,
has written a pamphletl•entitled
cegenation"—that is, Amalgamatlon-;-
and on page 56 hesayti: I
"The-only anomaly in our blacketirmY
is "that, it has white officers. ThisAvill

block , private and , non-commissioned

lo lead.men not only of-his lown . rhlce,
but men of the white:race. It will tie
sad misfortune-if this' war should end
without a battle being fought by ahlack
General in command of a white ormii r
, cd!body of troops."l • •1 • •• - !!•t:
And there can be no doubt that ;su i t it
are the sentimentsrof ftesident:Lindo
Wendell Phillips, the file leeder of t h e
