The pieces were limbered and dragged down

chants was decided in the United States Circuit
Court in Phtla.ielphia. The ease was the Unit

and was in the form of a cad stated In order to
settle the question whether certain liquor In
bonded warehouses on the that of July, 1864,
was subject to the duty of 31 50 per gallon un
act of Jun e 80th, 1864. The act or Oongress of
July ilst, 1162, imposed a duty of In cents per
gallon; this was increased to 60 cents by the act

30th of June, 1804, they had in tae bonded ware
houses 188,127 wine gallons of proof spirits man

, had been duly retuned to pie officers of the Un
ited States se bonded epirits, On the 30th of
Jun_ ,e 1861, the defendants paid to the Collector
of Unarm:a Revenue the sum of 387,063 70, being

bonder warehouses until alter - the ist of July,
1864. but was removed subsequently for sale by
the defendants without any additional duty hsv

pressed by Sherman. Hood's wagons,
and a brigade as a guard, are at Culla
die: He may possibly give battle at this
point; if not, he will have to fall back
on Galena, Alabama, where communi
cations are open. •
Gen. Slocum, ut Atlanta, sent out a
foraging party of 1,500 wagons towards
Rough and Ready and Decatur, and all
returned laden with corn. The army
has plenty or supplies, both in Atlanta
and in the geld. It is thought Hood
has all his srmy with hint, and it is sq. -
posed to be shout 35,000 men. Prison
era and scouts state that they are living
on parched corn and some dried fruit
collected through the country

Guerrilla Operations in Missouri
IIT. LOUIS, October 19, -- Glasgow,
Howard county, was captured on Satur
day by a large rebel lirce under Gener
al Clark. The placJ , was held by sir
companies of the 43d Missouri, twelve
months' men, under Col. Harding, who
fought bravely for five hours, but were
finally overpowered by superior 1111111-
br.ts, and surrendered. The enemy had
lour pieces of art:liery.

eral other buildings were burned.

The Peace Convention—Another
Presidential Caniddate.
CINWNICATI, October. 10.—The Peace
Convention met hero yesterday with

manent chairman. A committee on re,
solutions was appointed, and the Con
vention adjourned to meet to-day. It Is
understood that an independent Presi
dential nomination will be made.

Montgomery Blair Missing.
animism, October O.—Yesterday
afternoon 'a train' to Lexington, Ken
tucky, was fired Into, nine miles this
side of Pails, last evening, by a band of
guerrillas. The train stopped and the
passengers got out, when anbther vol
ley was fired, slightly injuring one or
two passengers. The train immediately
put back, arriving at Covington at
eleven o'clock. Hon. Montgomery
Blair was among the passengers, t'n
iviste for Lexington, and has not been
heard of since the attack.

NEW Yous, October 19.—A Tribune
Strasburg special says : The rebel army
is•believed to be 12,000 strong, and is
commanded by Gen. Longatreet. Our
loss on the 18th was about two hundred
and forty. The enemy occupies Fish—
er's Hill.

Bridgeport and hold the gaps on Pigeon

Rouse to-day. It was rumored howev
er that the object was a new movement
against the State banks.
Gen. Sherman in his official report of
his campaign states that Gen. Howard
was appointed to the vacancy caused by
the death of General McPherson by or
der of the President. Gen. Hooker took
offence at this and was relieved at his ,
own request.
The Post's Washington special says:
The assistant Secretary of War says it is
not yet decided whether the New York
and Pennsylvania Invalid soldiers will
be sent home to vote in November. No
favoritism will be shown to any State.
FROM ST. ALBANS, Vt
An Invasion of the Town
ST. Arnaws, Vt., Oct. 19.—An inns
.to of this town took place to-day. Some
wenty-ilve armed desperadoes from
Canada, supposed to to in the rebel em
ploy, made an assault on several hunks
alnlit four o'clock this afternoon. The
National Bank was robbed of about
$30,000, mostly In bills; the St. Albans
flank was robbed of $70,000, and the
Franklin Bank of s considerable amount.
Twenty horses were also seizsd by the
desperadoes and carried oil. Several
citizens who restated were deliberately
shot, and two were wounded, it is fear
ed, fatally. E. .1. Morrison, contractor,
C. H. Huntington, jeweller, and several
others were reported slightly injured.
The raiders threatened to burn the
town, and left in the direction of Cana
da. Large parties of armed cltizen-t
It ive gone in pursuit.

Our Viotory over Gen. Hood
NEW YORK, Oct. 19.—Tne importance
of our victory over Hood at Alatoona,
was not imuls appirent by the first re
port. It appears that there wore stored
thr re one million and 4 half of rations,
,•I which Flood was informed by some
women who ascertainell the fact. Be
sides A.latoona is situated so that, with
10,000 men Hood could have held the
place against ten times his numbers.
Hood attempted a surprise and capture,
but 3heran as soon as he learned the
direction Hood had taken, sent forward
three columns of troops with fifteen days
rations at their back, and signalled
Coosa to hold the place. How well he
hell it is already known.
From Cairo and Below,
CAIRO, Oct. 19.—Great excitement
prevails in this section of country In
consequence of a raid in western Ken
tucky by Forrest's force. Gen. Mere
dith, commanding the district issued a
proclamation calling on the citizens to
suspend business, and rally to arms to
drive back the rebel horde.
Forrest is reported at Corinth with a
strong cavalry, and exoreases his inten
tion to free western Kentucky from the
appressor and allow people to vote as
they please at the coming election.
The rebel force left at Eastport, Alia
tissippl, is estimated at abotit three hun
dred.
Further of the Roanoke
HALIFAx, Oct. 19.—Her Majesty's'
steamship Steady reports that it was ru—
mored that the Roanoke was captured
by the rebel Lieut. Brain°, who took
her to Bermudf and landed the passen
gers, but he was not allowed to coal or
provision. He then proceeded to sea and
burned the Roanoke off Bermuda, and
returning with the crew in boats. Ho
was at once -arrested by the British au—
thorities.

Simeon Draper, Collector at New
York, with other distinguished visitors,

LEXINGTON, By, Oct. 19.—Capt. Bel
don, of the Ist Kentucky cavalry, re
turned from Owensville to-day, having
encountered Jesse at Mud Lick Spring
with 800 men. Beldon lost one man
killed, Lieut. Dobson, and three privates
