Wise Ladies on Politics.—Whatever may
have been the case heretofore, it is certain that
theladies during the present time Interest them
nlves in the state of the country nearly as
much as the men. This may appear strange to
some, but it is nevertheless true, and however
incredible it may seem at the first glance, a
slight investigation will prove that the fact is
beyond contradiction. Another remarkable fea
ture, which? will appear yet more strange, is
that, as a general thing, the ladies are better
judges of the present state of alfairs than we
are, and they-as many - opportunities as we
have to manifest their oplaions, ere long we
would be relieved of any cloubt we may entertain
in regard to this statement. Passing over all
I questions concerning "delicate organization"
&c., let us examine the simple facts, and we will
had that not a few bf our eminent politicians do
not disdain to consult their "better halves" on
the most intricate affairs of state, and we would
venture to state that those who have not as yet
resorted to this plan would gain a great deal by
the experiment. We ourselves have received
some communications from ladles, and we are in
a position to state that they always display an
immense amount of sound judgment and critical
pereeptiOn,in fact far mote than those who think
themselves lords and masters of this earthly
sphere would give them credit for.
They are void of a great many Of_„etilr own
prejudices, and judge of the state of 'Affairs by
comparing the different accounts which they
receive, and thereby come to a more correct
conclusion than many of the rougher sex, who
sometimes form a one-sided opinion of the
whole concern. One of our lady friends, in
speaking of what she observed at home, says:
There was a big darkey in our house not long
ago known as George the Fiddler, who told MC
that he had a brother in the United States army
who not long since wrote to him, stating that
his "brethren of color" were treated worse in
our army than the slaves on the Southern plan
tations, and that although he did not openly
declare that they would have revenge, he said
what was equivalent to it." The lady then
draws her conclusion and says; "So this is what
the 'tlarkeys , are pondering over while they are
in our army, and are getting well drilled for that
purpose." We leave our readers to judge for
themselves of the conclusion she draws from the
above letter, but we must state that in this in
stance, as well as in many others, she displays
more sagacity than those who have had more
experience iu political affairs would do in lika
circumstances, for the very reason that few of
tne latter would deem it possible for them to
glean any important information from the letter
of a negro soldier.
We have received other communications from
the wives and lady friends of soldiers, in which
they make grievous complaints ot things winch
du not often come to the ears of the public, but
which they suffer none the less In the shade of
their private homesteads. tine of these says:
"I sent three papers to the army, but none of
them reached their destination=two Pittsburgh
Pons and one Uatholic paper." On this head
she says: "flits is the way the Abolition party
try to carry out their silicates, and for boar
'Little Mac' would be elected, they won't let a
Democratic paper into the army lithey ant help
it." We count give several other extracts
which would convey much tarot mutton to the
minds of our readers, but we have said enough
on this head already. However, before; we fin
ish we must draw one conclusion trona the
above, which Is, that the belies interest 14111-
w/es more in political affairs than we are in
alined to think, and that they will bear a far
more Influential part in public affairs in future
tit in they have dole heretofore.
Democratic Mass Meeting.—A meeting

As soon as the members of the ChM hail ta

After him several other gentlemen tdok the
stand and entertained the audience till a late
hour, when the meeting adjourned.

Photographs.—Nothing is more gratifying
to us, in tne absence of our friends, than to pos

their entire outward appearance. This is truly
gratifying, and no one should fall to impart so

pleases more than a keepsake of the most ex

large number of accomplished artists who are
constantly at work, and although it is beyond

NEW Yoax, October 3. The follow.

the operations below Petersburg:
"Yesterday, the 29th, General Gregg,
supported by two brigades of infantry,
pushed a reconnoissance from our left
toward the Lynchburg Railroad, as
near as Poplar lforing Church, beyond
the Vaugh turnpike. No enemy in any
force was discovered. To day General
Griffin's division of the Fifth Corps ad
vanced beyond the churcb, in a north
west direction, on the enemy in a posi
tion about two miles from the Weldon
railroad. Their preparations for de
fense, though not completed were very
formidable.
Gen.-Griflin decided to carry the works
by assault, and formed his division in
three lines of battle by brigade, the
third brigade in advance, under Col.
Gwin, of the 118th Pennsylvania. The
assault was practically and brilliantly
!successful The whole line was taken
! with two or three guns and about fid'ty
prisoners. The other guns were drag.

and wounded on the field. The prison

Among them was one Major, one Cap.

NEW Yong, October 3.—The Herald
has the following special account of the
fighting on the north of the James. On
Friday three desperate efforts were made
by the enemy to retake the works cap
tured from them by us on Thursday.
Gen. Lee in person was in command, but
the rebels were each, time driven back
with considerable loss.
The enemy. were discovered about 2
o'clock in the afternoon massing in a
woods directly opposite the point cap—
tured yesterday, and in half an hour
they charged with a wild yell in three
heavy columns of attack. The rains at
the same time opened upon our position
and - our line was enfiladed by the fire
from the rebel battery on the river.
The men, however, stood steady to
their posts, and received the rebels with
so hot and well directed and unerring a
lire, that they broke, in confusion and
retired to the woods twice. Twice again
they were rallied by their officers, and
returned to the charge, but only with the
same result, and finally, broken and dis
pirited, they fell back in irremediable
confusion, leaving the ground covered
with their dead and Wounded.
The prisoners represent that a thou
sand, at least, were killed and, wounded.
Over three hundred prisoners were taken
by us, including many officers and the
greater part of a North Carolina regi
ment. Among those captured are sev
eral field officers and Captain Maguire,
Inspector General of General Clingman's
staff. Three regimental flags were
taken, all by Stannard's division. Two
of them were captured by the 13th Con
necticut and 18th Pennsylvania.
The fight has been pronounced one of
most desperate and brilliant of the war,
and his skillful management of his troops
General Weitzel has added one more lea
to the laurels won in Louisiana
Grading Advance on the Lynch
burg Road.
The Battle at Fort Potosi.
ST. LOMB, October 3 —Surgeon Car
penter, Medical Director of this District,
acoomTranied by a rebel flag of truce, ar
rived here last night to pro ure medical
supplies for the wounded on both sides.
The rebels lost about two hundred killed
'and six or eight hundred wounded in
the assault on Fort Potosi. Major Wil
son, of the 3d Missouri militia, comman
ded the post, Captain Dinger, of the
47th Missouri, was earituifed by the reii.
els and badly treated. Major Walker,
who bravely' defended Potosi, and sev
eral other persons, were murdered in

Nothing reliable yet heard from Gen

road is pretty badly damaged, and it
will take two months to make repairs.
Nothing new from Franklin this Morn
ing. Two brigades enrolled militia
from this district have gone to Laclede

from here.
It is understood that General Rose

the rebel wttunded at Pilot Khob are
Colonel Thomas, Col. Monroe, Major

special dated Martinsburg, October Ist,
sitys: The la.test intelligence from Gen
eral Sheridan left him making prepara
tions to force the remnant of Early's
army froth BroWn's Gap in the Blue
Ridge. This was on the 29th of Sep
tember.. Early's position is represented
to be a very strong one, and he dount
less intends to Amid it, as .approaching
to_Gordonsville and Charlottesville, as
well as Lynchburg; for, while holding
this point, if General Sheridan advan—
ces upon Lynchburg, General Early
tthrAtatons his rear and supplies.
There can be little doubt, however,
of General Sheridan's success, for Gen.
Early's army has lost heart, and Brown's ,
Gap will only prove Aniother Pisher,s '
