PRE AMERICAN WAR

The South cannot be Subjugated—The
Prospects of Peace.
From the London Morning Star.
The principal circumstances which
would make us hope for an early peace
between thelatnerican belligerents ap
pears to have been overleoked. We do
not allude to considerations of justice,
reason and humanity. In the •heitt of a
deadly feud, especially among , kinsfolk
and friends who have quarreled, sneh
considerations count for little. Thai llie
South are fighting a clefenSive wir for
independence and self Government is
not likely to weigh much, apart from a
conviction of the impossibility of cop
quest, with twenty millions of infuriat
ed Republicans lighting ! for'emptre and'
revenge. But there is one con diderati
on
which we should thin-k. must have great
force, even with the Northern enthusi
asts. ft is, that by this • time the entire
North must have become weakened
an appreciation of the real nature of the
'war. They must by this .time have
learned, and learnedto their coot, that. ,
'what they have to io with is no mere
section of Southern politicians, bitt'flie
whole united people of the South. Such
a people can never be conquered norgot
rid of by extermination.
The war was originally undertaken
and entered . upon by the North upon an
hypothesis totally different- front the' t
real facts as they now stand revealed, a
and proved by four years of ineffectual ,t.
and fruitless fighting. The theory upon u
which the North plunged into the war, xi
was. in the presence of the facts as they
presented themselves to the. impartial , si
eyes of European spectators, one of the ,or
oldest end most whimsical it is possible ay,
'to imagine. That theory was that half a' 11'
dozen desperate men in the South had tl
seized upon the whole power .of Xhe..,
tl
country, against the wishes and.tbe *lt, 4
of niiiety-nine hundredths, or rather tl
nine hundred and ninety`-nlhe thou- ill

pressed the flower of the Southern youth
and manhood in the army, and compell- wi

their brethren 'of the North - and theft.' ly'
