By order of the oOrtimyrrEE ON MEEtINGS 'The Accident on this Penninsylvania Railroad.— [the frightful accident' which ()c -ourted recently on the PeandylVinla Railroad is.represented as having been terrible in the ex- . treme., qratiemert who arrived in. this city a short Lime after it took place, and who had oc, casion to witness the fearful scene of death and destruetion, representqt asturpassing anything •of the kind in the annals of Amerlean • railroad travel, and the description of the manner i n which the unfortunate sufferers met their death is truly heartrending. Men, women and child_ ren, all bu vt alive in the terrible conflagration, which °titillated among the debris of the shat tered care, presented a spectacle that baffles all description, and can better be imagined than de scribed. The accident is said to be entirely the result of the moat unpardonable negligence, but we bad better refrain from forming a Judgment in such a serious.matter as this before the cir ctunstancca be investigated into. Death bq a Fall.—Yesterday morning about two o'clock two watchmen discovered the body of a young man lying on the sidewalk in front of Wair's Tavern, on Penn street, between the canal and O'Hara streets. The skull had been crushed, and a Stream of blood was flowing from his load into the gutter. Alderman Don aldson was notified of the fact, and learned that the deceased wan a young German, aged about twenty years, and that he had been to thin country only a few weeks. He returned to the tavern whare he was stopping under the into ence of liquor and the proprietor gave him a bed in the gar.et. It is supposed that during the night he hid got out on the roof in his drunken condition rind fell headlong on the pavement be low. The body was conyeyed to Devore's coffin rooms tor the purpose'of holdlistp inquest. Escaped.—Thomaa Whittaker, a notorious deserter, who was sent from this city in compa ny with se, eral others in the early part of this week to rejoin hia'regiment, hat again succeeded 'in making his escape. It appears that the train In which they were conveyed missed connection at 1 1::!restline, necessitating a short stay of the Tarty at. that place. .Wiiittaker, who is a thor ough believer in the old 'Maxim that "time and tide watt for no man," thought that this oppor tunity would be as good as another for effecting his escape, so relieving hittitfelf of his handcuffs and the gitafds of all further retponsibilit y caa eeralng him, he quietly lett the company of the other deserters, which was doubtless very dis agreeable to a man of his character. Poet 0...1/ee lataprocoonerat.-.The Yostot floe Department has completed the preparation of the instructions, forms and blanks (or the op eration of the money order system.
