German Reglment.-Xhli regiment arrived in our city yesterday at about three o’clook in the afternoon. They here met at the depot by a largo orowd of friends who were pxpeoting their arrival, and who after ward* accompanied them while marching Home. ; They seemed very much reduced in numbers, and their flag gave fearful evidence of hard.use age. More than half of it was entirely l torn away, and the remainder nearly torn into shreds. The regiment has seen some hard ser vice, and was engaged in several battles, in which they displayed both endurance and bravery, such as has been rarely equalled, never surpassed. , ’AJTTHOft T ITBTHtt warehouse, ■ ♦2,250,000 00 •t 196,200 86 $50,390 00 87,903 18 368,520 00 046,166 00 060,005 00 1,069,110 TO 23,489 50 128,803 63 f| , -,. ~||, -■- B| n;~i f I'n- i-r 11~« t iriri-ihnf' iti —*?“~rs~\rri . -fV" 1 -- ■' »VfiittYU .'••f/>%ytfr~ > iiaifrKAraie. r ' 1 - it- ■'■•■■■ ‘i ■:.,. " NkwYobk, September 19 — A Herald correspondent says: A telegraphic coip struction corps, engaged in "putting up wires between this and Fort Powhattart i numbering forty men, under William” Mclntosh, with six wagons, thirty-six mules and twenty horses, were captured : William Mclntosh, Frank Thompson and a colored teamster, art all of the par ty known to have escaped. In the .pur suit,-we first came upon them / m force at Small creek, near Hawkinsville, on the Jerusalem plank road, -where we found them strongly intrenched beyond tho stream, with the bridge torn up and aa almost impassable swamp interven ing . Coi. Stedinan, who commanded the advance,-made a strenuous effort to car -17 the position ■ bnt findingit ton Bti one, Genera] Dayis ordered up the 2d brigade nnder Col. Smith, and Clark's battery, for the combined effort. The 18th and sth Maine regiments formed on the left of the road, while the Ist Massachusetts and 18th Massachusetts, were on the right. The natureof the ground com pelled them to fight dismounted. After a very vigorous artillery fire of Lieuten ant Cameron and Sergeant Richenbacker of Clark’s battery, a general assault was ordered, which was obeyed with a will but without success. Thr enemy’s line was found to be. too strong. The First Kansas regiment in the charge became intermingled with the enemy, and fought them hand to hand, but were obliged to fall back. The enemy had six pieces of artillery, while we had hut four. Meantime we could hear nothing from Qen. Kautzs, although prisoners inform ed they captured a whole regi. ment of Knutz's command, armed with -ixteen shooting guns. If this he the case !: must be the Ist District of Colum bia regimeiK, as they only had six-shoot ers. As it now stands, our chances 01 recovering the drove ar'.'’ slim, and we wiii have to own that the rebels have outwitted j;s this lime, and make the best of it. <*ur losses to-day in the 2d Division arc not more than twenty or twenty-five. The political news is not important. The prospect of an armistice in America is very anxiously debated in England, The Times continues to represent that the feeling of the North in favor of an armistice is rapidly increasing but the idea is strongly entertained by many that an armistice is impossible, because it would necessitate the raising of the blockade.. • The Times attributes the indecisive character of the war'to breech-loaders and earthworks. It continues: A quar ter of an hour ofsnch fire as good troops well armed can now maintain is enough to stretch whole dozens on the ground. In Virginia and Georgia both armies are eptrenched alike; the result is that the .main body of each army holds a secure .position, and the opposing bodies fight eachpthpTi 4f.it were, by sorties.
