Oumbet.lanki pecupied by :the Relibla
Proclamation fo Gov. Curtin.
HARRISBURG, July 30.—The most ex
perienced military men at this post are
convinced that the invasion of the State
is by a large force, composed of some
of the troops .of Lee's arniy. It is alio
beliested that theinVasion is of a charac
ter too gigantic to be regarded as a mere
raid. I.t.'Wthild' be rash to venture an
opinioh as to, the designs of the enemy,
the point at which he intends to deliver
a blow, or the territory he will traverse.
The capital-of the State forme a tempting
object in his contemplation. Baltimore
presents its attractions, and through that
-"ity the capital of the nation is again
doubtless yearned by these bold invad
ers.
The telegraphic operator has left ship
pensburg, and the presumption is that
the enemy has thrown out a strong ad
vanced parties in that direction.
Simp three o'clock this morning we
have no communication with Chambers
burg. At that hour the rebels entered,
and now hold the place. Major General
Couch is at Carlisle directing the neces
sary means of defense, the details of
which cannot, of course, be alluded to.
The presumption is, however, that lie
will he able to offer a stern resistance to
any advance that may be made in this
direction.
The Governor has just issued the fol
lowing proclamation to 4 the people of

HE MARCHES ON RICHMOND,
Why His Delay &fore Petersburg.
N F.w Vona - , July 30.—A special to the
World, dated Washington, July 20th,
intelligence from the Upper Polo-
Inas to-day confirms the ad vi, es of yes
te:day, that the enemy had fallen back
from the line of the river, having made
ii new demonstration during the past
twenty-four hours. Whether they have
fallen hack to Winchester, it even fur
the r down the valley, is yet unknown.
There is no longer any reason for
keeping secret the (act that Grant's last
movement against Richmond is expected
by himself and by his friends to result In
something far more decisive than any
thing he has yet undertaken against the
rebel capital.
Senator Wade, of Gino, and wife,
some three weeks since, paid a visit to
the Army of the Potoniac. The Senator
W.LB feeling very blue at what he sup
posed was the failure of Grant's . cam
vsign against Richmond. On his return
to Washington after his visits however,
he was in the best of spirits, and told his
intimate friends that he had no doubt at
all but that the rebel capital would soon
he captured.
General Grant told him that his long
delay before Petersburg was due solely
to the extreme drouth, which rendered tt
impossible for him to move his men and
animals from wheie fresh water could be
in °cured.
Grant told Wade that plat as soon as
a sufficient quantity of rain fell to insure
a supply of watt r and lay the intolerable
tit in the roads, he would make a
movement which would fully satisfy the
I I, I lest, expectations of the country.
It will lae remarked that rains have
jo,t fallen in the vicinity of Richmond,
and Grant, true to his promise to Wade,
is now on the march to the rebel capital,
this time on•the north hank of the...fames
river.
Nntwithstanding the• witlylrawal of
the Sixth Corps, very large reinforca
'Dents have ht•e,, sent to Grant's army
from various quarters, including the
Eighteenth Corps, which thtely came
u from the Mississippi river. official s
i•re have the utinnt;t confidence OW.
Grarit will a, him; brilliant successes.
I.lzniasni . no, July no - -A large" rebel
e.ivalry and artillery force entered Chain
-1 ersburg this morning. Governor Cur
tin has issued a proclamation calling on
the people to organize and defend their
homes. The Patriot and Union news
rivers says that the telegraph. wires are
all down between Chambersburg and
ILarpersFerry, and Chambersburg and
Cumberland.
The a oat experienced men here are
c 'nvincrd that the invasion of the State
h., by a large rebel force, composed of
a of the b?st troops of Lee's army.
The movement is not of a character In
M. regarded as a mere raid. General
Couch is at Carlisle, and it is presumed
he will be able to offertnally resist iiny
advance made in this direction.
11 a. In.—A large public meeting is
now being held-here, and the people are
enrolling themselves. Arms and am-•
munition will be issued to all reliable
persona.
PFM.ADELPIMA, July 30.—The Bulletin
has a special from Harrisburg to-day,
sling that the rebels are marching in
three columns. It is believed in:official
circles here that the rebels intend mak
ing Bedford county and the mountains
adjacent, a sort of general rendezvous.
ILO not learned whether the rebe:s are
destroying and pillaging in their ad
vance. There is none of the alarm
shown so painfully during former 'rebel
invasions.

The Battle Still Progressing
Gene. Grata and rrleade at
BALTIMORE, July 31.—A1l doubt as to
the good news from Grant's army seems
to be rurnoved by a later dispatch just
received. The assault commenced at 4
o'clock on Saturday morning by a terri
ble e-xplosion which completely destroy
ed one of the enemy's principal forts in
front of Petersburg, containing 16 guns,
this was rendered a mils of ruins. Upon
this explosion our artillery opened with
one simultaneous and continuous rout
along our entire line. Up to the leav
ing of the mail boat at 10 o'clock, we
had captured two other earthworks, also
the entire outer line of rebel entrench
ments The battle continues with the
greatest fury.
IlEADquenTEns ARMY' of THE PoTO
- July 30, 10 a. re.--The great, event
so long anticipated, namely, the explo
.iion of the mine, under the rebel fort
in front of the Inn army corps came if
lids morning at 40 minutes past 4 o'-
t lock picket firing was kept up all night,
and in fact all the time the match was
applied to the mine the skirmishers
were still engaged on both sidea, the
volume of dirt was immense, and thrown
up 300 feet in the air. The 9th corps
at once * charged the works, driving-the
febels to their second line of entrench
menta, and taking a number pf prison
ers, some who were dug out of the dirt,
b.idly brused. These rebel prisoners
state that only about a dozen remain or
their regiment, a tiouth caroling one.
As soon as the explosion took place 129
guns immediately opened on our tient,
while the musketry played in on con
tinued tire along the front lthe 9th
and part of the 15th corps.
Prisoners say they were completely
surprised, those is the Girt being mostly
asleep at the time and also that there
were four guns in the fortifications
which of course were buried far out of
sight. tine of the prisoners states that
they were busy miming under our works
and that in two days they would have
been ready to blow them tip, se gut the
strrt of them however, and it is hoped
that long ere this reaches you thus Pe

the damage done to the telegraph line

that the force of Rebels now reported to
