.:speet al correspondence to the Chicago Post.
CHATTAHOOCHEE RiVER, GEOUGIA,
• July oth, 1864. f
My letter of the 4th inst. informed you
that the rebels had fallen back 'from Itiar
letta, and were again intreeching them
selves six miles south of that place, where
we ate again under fire confronting their
lines, and tht owing up counter works
and preparing , rifle-pits. We. pressed
them hard on the 4th, and-pressed in theft
flanks on the night of that day. 96
closely indeed where crureoliimns shoved
upon them, that during the night, they
withdrew, leaving untinahed works and
quite a number of prisen ere in our bands.
Early on the morning of ' the stb, we
were in active pursuit, driving the rebels
steadily forward and picking up a num
ber of prisoners, till we reached Vinings,
a railway station three milei this side of
the river by railroad, and eleven miles
this side of Atlanta. Here quite a bask
skirmish was had, resulting in the dis
comfiture of the rebels, who f r c:ptately,
retired to the river, many of them cross
ing over, being to hotly pressed that
another lot of prisoners were raptured.
A portion of the•rebels were cut off from
their pontoons; and forced to swim the
river under our fire. They cut off their
pontoons as they crossed over, which
swung around to the southern side,
where they are under cur advance fire
from this side. Last night they succeed
ed in getting some of them: away and
out of our range,
The Rebels this aide ofthe River —Mete
r- position. , '
Though many ofthe rebelahave cross
ed the river they still appear en this side.
Their main positions are anumber, of
strong works about-a mile this aide of the
river to the right and left , of the railroad
fronting the railroad bridge. • They will
dispute our passage of the river, I think
most desperately, 'knowing well it is their
last natural line of defense this aide of At
tante.
The Rebel Defences Beyond the River
On the other, side of the river extend-.
lug up and down the stream, and across.,
our line of march, they have very exten
sive and elaborately constructed works,
well armed and defended by artillery,
some of which is of a very heavy calibre.
Fortifications andjarth works of a very
strong character. I am told by prisoners
and residents, ' extend from the river
quite on to Atlanta. Already successful
and precautionary 'reconnoissances have
been made on our part, during which
the enemy's salient points ;have been
developed. The rebels hold the, railroad
bridge, which they are most *certain to
destroy, as the last of their forces. cross
over. This, however, will nonstop us,
if our avenues efi crossing
. have, to be
opened' tindertheir fire and in the face
of the most terrible opposition they may
be able to exhibit . , r . , :
A View of the 'City of Atlanta.
From a lofty hill, near Vinings, ten
miles this side of Atlanta, a fine view of
the city is:afforded. I went up on that
hill to-day, and:looked across•upon that
most important of all the cities in rebel
dons except ' Richmond. The place' is
crammed to auffoCation with the influx'
of the rural population, whoihaive fled.
thither from northern Georgia , at our•ap
preach. lam told that:just such a state
of huddling together, of heterogeneous
masses, confusion, discord, distraction'
and morals never existed on this or any
other continent as now exists in Atlanta.
From this 'hilltop, yesterday Afternoon, ,
I saw long lines' aiad•eolumns of rebel
troops moving in the direction of Atlan
ta. They were probahly going to take
position id vomelif the fortifications be
yond the river, or they may have been
the army •of conscripts going back to
construct yet other works, in ease their
front lines Itave-to be abandoned. 'The
rebel transportation wagons were heard
all last Meta running in the' direction of
Atlanta—donbtleits‘ taking 'ha& all the
army surplusage. ' I am 'told I that the!
citizens are leaving Atlanta itr ( hriticipa-;
tion of ourspeedy' advent 'there. • The'
machinery from the machine shops, and
the Government taluablea Arty also 'be
ing removed to thit interior of the State'

eutpressed with 'a conviction tif theirin
abiaty to hole Ihe Place. '. ..
Horrid Sights—Condition of the 'Peppin,'
It is no unconkinowthing tri-seefin the
woods, as we approach Atlanta, the re
mains of hunienitiehigit swinging front'
limbs and saplings; where :they were
hung.ina state 'of ptitr.d ilecay and tiecom-•
poition—in some instances nothing but'
skeletons and dried' flesh''remaining'-to
attest tlie perpetrktgon of the horrid act.
It may seem • amazing to • ycnar good
readers of Chicago that such sights' are
met all through these woods, tand that'
these skeleton's' and remains hang 'and ,
decay for weeks' within short iligtaneesi
of the 'houses where people: chliming to'

fact. On the sides? of the bill stoker' of,
