Franklin in Baltimore. (From the Baltimore American of lard eveningi Major General Franklin arrived in the city during the past night, as we anti: cipated, and is this morning at Barnum's llot,l, resting from his fatigue and ex posure. The following is a briefaccount of his capture and escape: He was seated in the ear, at the time or his capture, alongside of wounded lieut tenant colonel, when a rebel officer came in the train and addressing himself to the wounded man said: "Are you Ma jor General Franklin?" He repled that he was not, and gave him his name and rank. General Franklin was in citizens dress but the rebel also put the question to him, and he finally answered that was his name and rank There was no doubt in his mind, from the manner of of the interrogator, that he had been pointed out by some of the passengers. The rebel said: "General, I am happy to see you." The General replied: "I cannot say that lam pleased to see you, under the circumstances." About ten minutes afterwards Gilmore came in the car, and, addressing himself to Major General Franklin, mid: "Gen. eral, you will consider yourself my pris. oner.'' lie was then put in a carriage, and with other prisoners, driven through the country, stopping a while at Towson. town, and then across to the Relater. town road, where they arrived about 10 o'clock On Tuesday morning, and im. me,diately bivouacked for the night. The General was put in custody of Captain Owens and two guards, who were charged with his safe keeping. Ex. presssng himself as sick and weary, he immediately laid down and feigned sleep. Soon after the captain and his guards laid down', and he listened anx iously for indications of sleep on their part. He had not to wait long before he heard the guard nearest to him com mence to breath heavily, momentarily increasing in volume and profundity, until it became sufficiently loud to wake an ordina.ty sleeper. The captain and his other guard had also in the meantime commenced to breaths rather heavy, and the General continued, with. his ears open, also to feign sleep. He laid in this way for some time, until all three gave unmistakable signs of sleep. Fear ing that they were playing possum, he got up and walked carelessly around them, moved.over to the fence and still watched them. He then coughed loud ly and made considerable noise, think ing that they wanted an excuse to shoot at him, each man laying with the right hand grasping the muzzles of their rifles. The indications of profound sleep be ing so unmistakable on the part of all three of them, he now thought that he. would test the sincerity of their slumbers by jumping the fence, This he,did, and, on looking back, could e no movement of the dusky forms of his guardians, and off he shot across several fields, jumping fences. and keeping straight ahead in the direction he thought would take him towards the city. He ran for about three quarters of an hour, when he entered a thick woods, and in his weakly state, be ing rcallycbroken down itly, fatigue, he sought a place of concealment. He.remained concealed, for the :bal ance of the night, and all the neat day, - frequently seeing from his hiding place the rebelliconta searching; for him, and scouring ithe bushes and woods. Final— ly, about sunset; almost damished for water and food, he thought he would venture out, haying come to the con clusion ,that freedom and, starvation were nearly as bad as being a prisoner without ; (these, ;deprivations.. He still kept to t t he woods, 'however, and lie noon saw two men moving towards him, mscillr!g.! large bundles. of 'hay.
