The Sanitary Commission Journal, al- Incling to,- the great fairs being- . held in behalf of. the:: Commission, complains that, however creditable these fairs are , to the charity and patriotism of thepeo ple, thby have thus far resultedin loss rather than in gain to the §anittiry Com mission.. Instead Ofiilling the treasury to overflowaa 4 Many peoplelmagine, theyActAiir at this moment to be in- Atrifiittental in bringing its funds down, ....anrin g the coming summer, to a lower point than they have ever reached be fore. It says the Commission has re ceived from all of them, so far, $426,000, and expect to receive $1,000,000, but they must refer to some time antecedent to the most successful of the fair* fui several of them have realized each as much as the first named sum. She Jour nal adds the following: Our receipts in supplies last year amounted to $2,000,000; at the rate at which they have been coming in during the last four months, they will not this year amount to more than $1,000,000; in other words, they have fallen off exactly one half. This leaves the value of our receipts, including those derived from the Fairs; not what it was in 1863, but in reality much lower. The million dollars worth of supplies which we received last year, we have this year to purchase our selves, at prices which are certainly twenty-five per cent. higher than they were twelve monthi ago, so that instead of being so rich that we do not know what to.do with our money, we are suf fering from the Fairs a deduction from our previous income of at least $200,000. This is a result we need hardly say which was not foreseen when the' Fairs were started. If the public now cease to support us as before it would have been vastly better for the soldier that not one of them had ever been held. An 1 un less the people resume their contributions of supplies, and leave us the proceeds of the Fairs as a clear addition to our in come, we shall have to curtail our oper ations instead of extending them. We do not doubt that much of the fal ling off in the contribution of goods is due to the exhaustion of household stores and the enormous rise in the price of nearly every article of general consump tion. To the mass of people throughout the country it is undoubtedly harder to give now than it was two years ago. All we can say on this point is, that an increase of sacrifice and privation is the inevitable consequence of the prolonga tion of the war. The longer it lasts, the more we must all suffer, the citizens at home as well as the soldier in the field. We shall have every week a greater number of wounded and disabled Olin on our hands, whom it is our duty to take care of, and it is a duty which we cannot and ought not to shirk. It, no doubt, every day costs more to do it, but it is none the less sacred and imper ative for all that. To this, people must make up their minds. We, as well as the army in the field, have enlisted for the war, be it long or short ate TUES- .y alternate ew York every A Touching Scene.—We are often, while in the performance of duty brought to a knowledge of the good as well as evil that lies deep down in the hunhn heart, only on special occasions to be called forth, as often surprising the pos sessor as those who, knowing him from childhood, all life-long looked open him as a negative being. Yesterday, as WC were leaking our way through a street that shall be nameless in this par agraph, inhabited only by the poor—the very, almost abjectly poor—our attention was drawn to a little girl, of good face, sitting on the last step of three leading to the hall-way of one Of the tumble-dcan concerns of which the street is compris ed, the upper one being oceupied by a poorly-clad woman, whose face, though she slept, gave earnest through the hard lines of rare abundant, that her early life had been better spent. The place and the hour led us to the bullet that the woman was drunk, and that the child was watching for her recovery from the stu por of the liquor she had het n drinking all day. Nearer approach to the group made our:surtnises almost a certainty, and we accosted the child, asking her if the sleeping woman was her mother and a drunkard. -Notwithstanding the dirt that covered her pretty face, the blush that mantled it was plainly risible, and in a moment we regretted having spoken. "Mother is now poor and has to work hard to support us," and she burst into tears as she concluded: "but she is good to us. She is tired, sir, and is only rest ing herself, and I am watching for her, ! as she once watched for ice. She is good, very good." The poor woman giving signs of awakening, we left, touched by the exhibition of fidelity and love as well ! as sensibility,in one so young. "I watch for mother, as she once watched for I me."—Memphis Argos. 1,589 57 150 00 22,809 27-4190,881 67 HIGH Pun'Ets.—The wisdom of the counsel which tolls people to punish "extortionists" by not using an article when it has advanced in price, may be pretty well illustrated in the recent rise of several articles of prime necessity. The butchers advanced the price of meat; people must not use meat. The bakers of Boston have advanced the price of the ten cent loaf to twenty cents; people must not eat bread. The shoe. makers have again raised the price of'' shoes, and the advance is a considerable I one; people must not wear shoes. If the advice is taken in all these instan ces, the people will soon leave them selves naked and starving. The rise of prices in all things is a fact beyond any one's control, and arises not from com binations and extortion, but from the necessities of the war and the means ta' ken to carry it on. It is idle to talk of "extortion" when every thing that is consumed, all the materials of labor and 1 the wages of workmen have alike ad vanced. With a million of men drawn from labor to fight battles, the produc tion of the country must necessarily be less. Another million engaged in man ufacturing materials of war in the work shops and shipyards, must draw that much labor from the production of food, and by making it scarcer, make it dear er. This, added to currency deprecia tiqn, raises prices all over the land, and sufficiently exp'ains its necessity with out resorting to "extortion" as a reason. rivuE GREATEST EXCITEMENT 1 . ever known in the Dry Goode market, Goods advancing rapidly, but buyers can still find at C.
