Draft in the 23d District.—There seems to be a wonderful complication of affairs in the late draft in the 23d District, composed of Alh gherty, west of the river,'Butier and Armstrong counties. An order has becn received from the Provost Pdarshal General Fry, to refund the amount of commutation paid by those who were drafted in the fifty per cost excess. this being declared illegal. tieveral of those "fifty per cent excess"imen, however, have already re. ported or furnished substitutes, and are'itow mustered into the service. It at ill not do to ex_ act service from these and refund the money to I others. Such a discrimination would be un righteous. No blame is attached to Capt. Kirker, Provost Marshal of this District, 59 he did not receive the necessary orders In time to correct the mistake. 11.1.11 ed.—Mr, B. F. Geary, brakeman on the Bald Eagle Vallery Railroad was ins.antly killed, near Matilda Station, on Wednesday last. He was doing something, It is not exact ly known what, about the couplings, between two cars, the train being In motion, but very slowly, when Lis head was caught between the bumpers and crushed in a shocking manner, killing him Instantly. We understand Mr. Geary was a lawyer, and has had some practice in that profession. He has baen in the zallltery service, and has taught common school In Al toona and Hollidaysburg. His remains were taken to Unionville, Centre county, on Thurs day morning, where we understand two of his brothers reside. lie was abont 25 years of age A Mau Shot.—A man named Sullivan was shot and dangerously wounded at Chartier'a Creek on Saturday morning, under the follow ing circnmstances: 'He was discovered early in the morning in the strawberry patch of alt. Samuel Nichols, either eating or gathering ber ries with the intent to take them away. Mr. Nichols ordered him sway and shot at him, we suppose to frighten him away. The contents of the gun, however, took etrect in the neck and jaw of Sullivan and wonnded him dangerously. Nichols and the wounded man were both brought to town and Nichols gave himself up to the officers of the law. Dr. McCook, we believe, dressed the wound of the unfortunate man and he is now" doing well. Indiana County. —A bold robbery was com mitted In Shelocto, Indiana county, a few days ago. Hletr County.-111r. Trattah, editor of the Hollidaysburg Standard, has been "grafted Into thearmy." We do not think he can be spared rant his post, although there is no doubt that he would make a Standard soldier. Grand 112naleal Festival.—Afr. Woifsohn the leading pianist In the Inner circles of Pmla delphla, announces a concert for Friday even ing, and a matinee for Saturday. Hie own series of classical matinees are among the most re etterrhe and fashionable entertainments of the winter season, and are especially thronged by ladies, who, upon these occasions, may go unattended by male friends, thus being indepen dent In their movement. which they seem to en joy exceedingly. Mr. Wolfeohn is accompanied by Frederici, the beautiful and gifted prima Bona of the German Opera Company, which closed such a brilliant season on Saturday . night at the Academy of Music In Philadelphia. The papers there are in ecstacies over her su perior voiceand its rare cultivation. Here Hint iner is the favorite tenor or the compiny and is incomparably great in Ootincd's opera "Faust," which now seems the rage everywhere, and tvne the closing opera of the season. The arrange ments for the concert and matinee seems excel lently disposed, and we refer our readers to the advertising columns for the details. Our amateurs must rejoice at the prospect ol hearing three' Stich superb artists as Frederick, Himmer and Wolisohn.
