fi Iwi ,B.4tilp: pot. 1 PROX GEORGIA Johnston's Movements Explained on Rebel Authority. From the World's OorrespOndent. BALTIMORE, June 1.1 ft.lur (dation or General .10hu4011.14 MO% I meta& in Georgia. Among the letters in the rebel mail that was recently intercepted here were some that referred to that part of the plan of the cnmpaign which bad been intrusted to General Johnson. These biters were written by persons whose official position in two instances, and whose relationship in another, gives great weight and authenticity to what they say. From these, and other more recent sources, I have derived the fol lowing facts in relation to the present movements of General Johnston in Georgia. Tha succsssive, retreats of the rebel army under General Johnston from Dal ton to Resaca, from Resaca to the line of the EtoWah river, and from the Eto wah to Marietta and the line of the ChattahOoche {for it has been de terruined that be shall eventually take that last' step,) gives great di.seontent to the people in the South, but it is really ' what the Southern leaders had deter mined on before the 'campaign began. The'rebellion is not on its last legs yet, nor hhve the rebels got in their armies now all their fighting men. Still their armies have cost them too much, and are raised with too much difficulty, to allow the life of a single soldier to be thrown away uselessly, and their Gen erals, therefore n this campaign avoid all. engagement the results of which would only be the fruitless sacrifice of •their men. Theltebele Areree to Fighting more than One Great Battle in Geoi-gle. In arranging the details of the cam paign in Georgia, it was seen that at least one great battle must be fought be tween Chattanooga and Atlanta, but they hoped to fight that battle at such a lime, and under such circumstances of position, &c., that it should not only he decisive of the campaign in that, it would deliver Atlanta from all fears of subsequent attack, but that it would have these two further results: Ist. That Sherman's army would be entirely de stroyed, or, at least, so severely (-tippled that to retreat north of the Ohio river would be all that it could do. And 2d. That Johnston's army, after seen' in_ the permanent safety of Atlanta, would be in a condition to move rapidly to the east, and to join General Lee in detest ing the forces operating against Rich m ond. And they hoped that one battle Wild be sufficient to enable them t.. g in these ends. The only (F,estion then was, where and when should this b.,tue be fought? Evidently, where the rebels would be the strongest and the federals the weakest; where the rebels were nearest to their base, and the fed erals farthest from their base; at a point whence the rebel army, after the battle, could be most speedily transported to Virginia, and at a point whence the fed eral army, after being defeated or repul sed, would have the greatest difficulty. and the longest route to traverse, in re treating to Nashville. All these codicil ti >ns, it is claimed, meet, and are found, in the rebel position and the left bank o; the Chattahoochse river, six miles rb.rt h west of Atlanta; and in no other posi tion which General Johnston has :than doned. Johnstone Movenents Depend en: up-at Grant's • uer proposed depended greatly upon t progress of the campaign against Rich mond. And the rebel leaders claim tha the results which have followed tin adoption of the overland route by Gen eral Grant, his frequent changes of base•, and his final abandonment of "that line a, d adoption of the Peninsula route; and then abandoning that route, and seeking to establish a new base on the Jame-. river, have greatly facilitated their op erations in the West. Nothing decisive, they say, has yet taken place in Virginia. unless it he a fresh demonstration 6T the impracticability of co-operations against Richmond by the overland route. The obstacles to the capture of Richmond, which lay before General Grant when he set out on his campaign, lie before him now just the same. He has only lost, in getting to them, 80,000 men, whom he might just as well have had with him to-day; but for this very preminerit trait in General Grant's character, they rather like him than - not. Their losses in this overland campaign have not been one-quarter as large as ours. The South could not stand the sante drain upon her population that the war has made upon ours. If Gem Lee's army had lost half as many men as . We 'lave in the last six weeks, it would to-day be completely cut up, and utterly incapable of any resistance. If the ac counts of rebel losses.that are published in administration papers were correct, they wo ow that the rebels have lost more tiTEtt in battle than they ever had in their armies. Johnston Takes His Cue from Cee. The rebel leader's claim that Lee', maneuvers have have been successful, in that, with a small loss to their army, and a very large one to ours, they have drawn the federal army far away from -its qpital, and_ brought it ,to where it must spend months after months in profitless siege operations. Theft confi dence in the absolute impregnability of their capital is unshaken, and it must be admitted by those who know the facts, that it is well founded. The time has now cso,ei i therefoie,: they say,' :Ivlien that fai`4of4thecatapaign which has bbeii e intrugejilici9eneral Johnston will be de velow4.-k-• A STO ABOUt, QvAip„tm.—Asing- War , stdMated . conce . rning 6n a ventb*Animrs in Tixas,-Which iaaSat iWlffiio4oll ILSIDy- , thineliptllititimt 1. : ,1t Is, said that Gen sl,Watf i gatettof,nt.TekatijkaS - iipleS; to .1 01 ,Mfailir1V8‘ . : .'..k.dOell*Stfd.Y.Aftli - Thej.. - --ngieal .
