From Cleveland, aj an early pericid of the war, she re moved to Kentucky, and there her his trionic success continued, and it was suggested to her by Colonel W. Trues dale, the chief of army police, to make a little excursion to the headquarters of the Confederate General Bragg. This idea fully coinciding with her own innate love of wild anil dashing adventure, and an excellent pretext being available in the fact that she had a brother in the rebel service, she willingly uudertook ihc expedition. After the Colonel had given her a series of very minute, sol emn and impressive instructions for her guidance, she set iforth as a refugee and victim of “Northern tyranny.” All good as well-as evil fortune must one day take a tiirfi, and at length, in the very plenitude of her renown, the fair ana brave Pauline was taken in the dead of night by i-ebel scouts, while she was resting, at the house of one Baum, a farmer residing near the Hardin turnpike road, which she had been exploring after the capture,'of Nashville by the Union forces, her ipurpose being to ascertain the positiqh and strength of the enemy, after their mreist from the city. Col. Morgan, or as she calls him, "Johnnie Morgan,” the renowned guer rilla chieftain, became her first custo dian and conducted her to the quarters of General Forrest. The General was no little pleased to see Ijer in his camp and greeted her witli un feigned warmth. .The General question ed her as to her plans for .the future in the South, the position and resources of the Union army, Sc ", and all thesei nqui ries she managed skillfully to meet with woman’s ready wit. At length he sum inerily informed her that he should hand her oyer to his Provost Marshal General, Colonel McKmstry—“a humane and just man”—who would investigate the serious charges against her and accord ing to the truth decide. After a little more bandying of words on both sides, Pauline, still maintaining her Confederate loyalty, she was des patched to General Bragg’s headquar ters, at Shelbyville, where she had a long and interesting interview with that officer. Shortly after that interview, Miss Pauline was taken exceedingly ill’ and having been found guilty and con demned, was saved ; from death by this circumstances alone. It was only after three months’ captivity that ODe fine norning, while she still iay upon her sick bed, the joyous sound of thje Union bugles. as the rebels fled and the Federals under Generals Gordon, Granger, Mitchell, and Stanley entered the town, recalled her to liberty- and life. After this it was that General Garfield in recognition of her long and most invaluable services and her sufferings in two severe wounds re ceived from the enemies of the Union while she was on duty, that General Gar field conferred upon her the rank and title of Major by which she is now uni versally known. There arrived yesterday, at the Astnr House, where she will remain for a lew days, Miss Major Pauline Cush man, the gallant and true-hearted girl, with whose exploits the country Aor Li. and South lias been ringing for a veur past. She; has come among ua on" her way to the iarlher recesses of our cool and salubrious climate in pursuit of re laxation lrom her arduous duties, and a restoration ot her lutultU from the wounds and fatigues to which she'has been sub jected. A full narrative of all her ‘hair breadth 'seapes and ventures perilous’ -uue she entered the secret service of the Union would furnish forth a bulky volume, surpassing by far in real inter- j est the most ingenious and highly wrought fictions of the day.
