“ nd “us*.— Parties are a
civil or Political necessity. Thlß has keen
demonstrated in the history of every nation,
and indeed It is a law of nature. What would
become olj the solar syßtem If there were only
a centrifugal force, or or the tides If there were
no ebb’ Even the speaking, talking, tattling
telegraph jwottld be worthless without a nega
tive as well as a positive pole. The moon
waxes and wanes, and plants grow and decay.
There Is 4 law of decomposition counteracting
the law ojr growth and development. There
must be both cold and heat, snmmerand winter
day and flight, or else there must be an end of
all progress. It is opposing chemical properties
that form the new creation. This lawof oppo
sition runs jail through matter. And It appears
from every evidence which history and philoso
phy affordi that it is also Intended to balance
mind. If Deity liad created mankind so as to be
by nature ebual In Intellectual capacity, and to
incline to same opinions, there could Avd
been no variety of thought and
pre-adaptatfon for different callings. Just Imag
ine, If you please, an entire world full of hu'
man beings, festra ined by the laws of nature to
the very srfme quantity, quality, and klnd’of
thought, without the possibility of differing in
any particular point. What a curioua world
such would jbe. One design , one machine, and
one purpose to be accomplished. If one
man.iß a tinker, ail men must necessarily be
tinkers. If one man is an Abortionist the
whole werld mußt be Abolitionists, for diversity
of thought and opinion is not allowed. The
laws of nature governing mind would impel 'all
to think alike. Bu t Deity seems to have order
. ed things differently. He gave a diversity of,
mental endowments, as well as a diversity of
features to mankind. Why then should one
human creature attempt to fetter the mind of
another’ We never heard of a centrifugal an
nlhilating a centripetal force, merely because it
constituted a formidable opposition. Sum
nter’s heat reigns fora time, but shuffles off its
mortal coll, and gives due place to opposing
winter, without a shudder. If we had no daf
we would ;have too much night. A parching
drought makes clouds and rain necessary
There,ls of necessity opposing elements In nL
ture, but they understand each other. No otft
even heard of negative electricity arresting and
imprisoning the positive, for a dlflterenceof ae.
tlon. Thlß would be abßurd with Irrational
creatures. It ii left for the rational to perse
cute opposition, though history proves such to
be necessary to the health, growth and develops
ment or every government, and, especially, of
one whose fundamental principles are Demo,

Grant’s Army as Strong as Ever
| New Yonx, May 20.—A Times s nn.
cial,.dated Washington, May 19th, says-
Advices from headquarters state that
10 C n’ b i U £ DOt been rclle "'«l up to
10 o clock this morning. Latest advices
to this evening’s Republican has the fol
low.ng, but up to this date there is no
official confirmation ofit. The most re
liable information from the front to-day
is, that Genera] Grant succeeded vested
f a y, ln . , nearl J, turning the whole of
Lee s right. Shis was done more by the
sudden movement of bodies of trooos
to complete the surprise of Lee rather
than by actual fighting. The firing with
ami ery was only for the purpose of
making feints while the strategic work
wss going on. It was a question wheth
er the positions of both armies were not
changed this morning, in consequence
ot the successful operations of Grant
yesterday. If Grant fights to-day he
has an army as strong in numbers as it
was when it crossed the Rapidan and
relatively much stronger. *
