-Notwithstanding all obstacles and the
trying work of the past eight days our
men accomplished their advance with a
I alttCrit y and resolution that en
tities them to tho highest praise. As it

' „T ll e engagement which took place on
I hursday morning at daylight, and
which resulted in the first part if it in
Hancock s victory, was continued spirit
edly for several hours. The rebel forces
w ere a part of the command of General
! . , h General Burnside’s attack
was made at about the same time with
i that of General Hancock, the two form
ing a formidable attack on the right
wing of the enemy's right line. The
- country was broken and hilly, and cov
ered with dense woods.
! About 3r, m., it was resolved to force
the enemy's works with Hancock's
corps. General Potter’s division formed
our right, General Crittenden’s First di
vision the center, and Wilcox’s Third
division on the left. The enemy met
| our advance with a very hot reception
and it Was evident that they had made
! 3,1 thc preparations they could to resist
it. A relief brigade opened suddenly on
a portion of Wilcox’s division and crea
ted some confusion. They demanded a
surrender, but the demand was not com
plied with.
A sharp and close fight ensued, and n]_
timately a portion of the Seventeenth
Michigan, and Fifty-first Pennsylvania
were taken prisoners, mat remaimvA
