The Jewish Passover..—On Wednesday
evening Mat commenced the observance of the
Passover or Paschal Festival, also called the
Feast of Unleavened Bread, instituted to com
memorate the deliverance of Israel from the
bondage of Egypt. It is the first commandment
the Lord vouchsafed through Moses to the Isra
elites. Thus It is a rabbinical theory that the
twelfth chapter of Exodus, in which this has
been declared, is the commencement of the law
of Moses. In this chapter, in verses 14 and 20,
It is ordained' "Seven days shall ye eat unleav
ened bread, even the first day shall ye put leav
en out of your houses.• • • Seven days
shall there be no leavened bread found In
your houses, for whosoever eateth leavened
bread, that soul shall be cut off from IsraeL"
There is one necullar observance,. which, more
than anything else, distinguishes this festival
from all others in the Jewish Calendar, viz:
The observances in the family circle on the first
two evenings. On these evenings the Jewish
families assemble in their dwellings around a fes
tive board, on which are spread horse radish, to
commemorate the bitterness of bondage; en
esx, In commemoration of mourning for the de
stroyed temple; greens to commemmorate the
blessings of God; a mixture of apples, almonds
and cinnamon, resembling mortar, In remem
brance of the loam used by the Israelites in
their works during their bondage in Egypt; and
a bone from a lamb to indicate the Paschal sac
rifice. After blessing the wine,
the history of
the exodus from Egypt is related and hymns and
psalms recited in a joyful tone in honor of the
grand meaning of the dity. These gatherings are
carried on in every house, and are even strictly
observed by the less religiously inclined.
Fire on Penn Street.—Yesterday morn
ing, between one and two o'clock, the large one
story brick warehouse occupied by Mr. Daniel
Wallace and others, was discovered to be on
Are. The alarm was given by - the watchmen,
but although the firemen and steamers were
promq on the ground, all efforts at saving the
bull proved unavailing. However, much
valnab e property adjoining was saved from de
struction by the vigorous working of the fire
department.
Mr. Wallace was the lessee of the building,
In which he did a commission business. There
were stored in the house about 1,000 barrels of
flour, 500 barrels of whisky, 1,000 barrels of salt,
a large quantity of tobacco, over 3,000 empty
oil barrels, and a large quantity of other goods.
His loss le estimated at 410,000, upon which he
has an insurance of 400,000, divided between the
Arctic, Continental, People's and Monongahela
companies.
Mr. Peter C. Reneirs, marble cutter, occupied
a portion of the warehouse fronting on Penn
street. He had a large amount of finished
work on hand, and will lose heavily. He Is
partially insured.
Hobert A. Colville, marble cutter, who oecu
pied ^ small building adjoining the warehouse
on Wayne street, lost about three thousand

Sanitary Fair.—The buildings for the Fair
are progressing finely, and by the last of next
week will be far enough advanced for the pea

Important from North Carolina.
BALTIMORE, April 22.—The American
has special advices from Norfolk that
the steamer "Eliza Hancock" arrived
there yesterday from New Orleans, via
Morehead, where she was taken to bring
imporant dispatches to Gen. Butler. The
Captain reported that a rebel ram came
down to within a few miles of Plymouth,
N. C., and on the 18th inst. attacked our
fleet, and sunk the gunboat "Bombshell"
and two others, names unknown. Great
anxiety prevailed at Plymouth, and it'
was generally expected that the place
would be evacuated. It wasthought that
Gen. Peck would be fully able to bold
New bern.

because the gentleman ( Mr. Garfield)
who recently read letters purporting to
be written by the Hon. J. G. Davis and
Judge aides, was not in his seat. Con

The letter, alleged to have been writ- i
ten by Mr. Davis, reccommended a
young man, formerly of Cincinnati. and
then in the Union army, to Breckin
ridge for a position in the rebel army.
On motion of Mr. Morrill, of Maine,
the consideration of the Internal Tax
bill is to be considered throughout the
evening as well as the morning session.
The House then went into a committee
of the whole on the state of the Union,
and resumed the consideration of the
Tax bill.
Mr. Morrill offered an amendment
which was adopted, that wholesale deal
ers in liquors whose annual sales do not
exceed $50,000, shall pay a licence of
$5l), and $lOO on every $l,OOO over $50,-
000. Every person who shall sell, or
offer for sale, any distilled spirits or fer
mented liquors in quantities of more
than three gallons, at any time, or whose
annual sales,amount to 25,000 per annum;
shall be regarded as a wholesale dealer.
SENATE—.I)n motion of Mr. Howard,
of Michigan, the bill to amend the Pa
cific Railroad Act was made a special or
der for Thursday next.
The House hill to establish a Bureau
of Military Justice, was taken up. It
authorizes a mireau. consisting of a
Judge Advocate and two Assistant Judge
Advocates, with clerk::, &c. The bill
was so amended a., to give the .Judge
Advocate the rank of Brigadier General,
at a salary of $4,000 per annum. The
Assistant Judge Advocate, rank of Col
onel, at a pay of $3,000 per annum, and
was then passed. The Army Appropri
ation hill was then taken up and the
amendments of the Finam.,: ~. munittee
agreed to
Organizing Colored Regiments.
CHATTANOOGA, April 2.4.--Colonel T.
.1. Morgan, of the 21th colored regiment,
has been authorized lo organize two bri.
gades of colored troops. The nucleus of
two new regiments have been formed.
Recruiting is progressing favorably now.
There are six colored Regiments in this
department now.

was destroyed by fire on the 2cl instant.
The loss amounted to from two to three
millions of dollars. The long continued
drought eaused a scarcity of water, ren
dering it necessary to blow up the build
ings to save the town.
