CONNECTICUT ELECTION
The annual election in Connecticut
takes place to-day; and an Abolition
contemporary, alluding to the means its
party has used to ins ure a •virtory ON er

"we have the dead wood upon them."
We have no doubt of this whatext r, on

and just as sure to win. For 105110., e

those astute persons who figure behind
the scenes arranging for the (onsmill

only exempt but entitled to considerable
credit. The election which takes place_
to-day explains all this. Victories at the

If, after careful canvass, these people
find that thei • party is likely to go Under

termed having the "dead wood" upon
the outraged people who are opposAl to
our present despotism.

Speaking of the seven days' light Gen

Grant also praised him for the speedy
restoration and management of the

conversation I had with Gen. Grant, I
am led to infer that Gen. McClellan
was in no way "intoxicated by his eleva

Gen. Grant's opinion is, and it can be

AT PITTSBURGH, PA.,
For Sick and Wounded Soldiers and Sailors
A.I)I_)IVESS.
THE PITTSBURGH SANITARY 00lif
9IITTEE a . branch of the U. S. Sanitary Corn
-mission, established for the relief of the sick and
wounded soldiers, announce to the public that a
Great Fair will be held at Pittsburgh, Pa-, com
mencing on
The First Day of June, 1864
The object of the Fair is to obtain money to
enable the Sanitary Commisdion to proceed with
their good work with increased energy and use
fulness. The practical workings of the United
States Sanitary Commission have been of such
incalcuable good, and have met such high ap
proval from the ent4re people, that an enumera
tion of its claims is Useless.
Every one feels it a duty to succor the wound
ed, sick and disabled soldier. The promPtings
of every' Loral heart speak clearly, that we, who
do not bear the dint and turmoil of the battle,
should provide liberally for the "war-wprn sons
of the Republic " Christian charity speaks
trumpet-tongued to each and every pney telling
us to tender to the wants of those who are sick,
wounded and disabled in our country'sgiorious
cause.
The duties of our common humanity teach us
that all should unite in the cause; and If a cup
id cold water is not to go unrewarded, . that im
mortal favors will not be bestowed on those
who are the liberal donors to so deserving and
charitable a work.
Much good has been accomplished in Hie past.
Much more can be done in the future fly united,
energetic and liberal action favoring the united
!-)tates Sanitary COMInisSIOO.
The ranks of our armies itre being rapidly till
ed, and several hundred thousand brat's soldiers
now stand "shoulder to shoulder" to uphold the
lit es (personal and political) of the people of the
Or( at Republic—to hold sacred our homes and
our altars—to preserve our social; commercial
and political prosperity, and shall we not succor
and aid them when wounded, sick anti dfsabled
t cur sister cities, New iork, Brooklyn- Phila
delphia, Cleveland, St. Louis, and all through
out the length and breadth of the, land are en
gaged In this holy and necessary work. Shall
not we also show by our liberality and bounte
ous charity to this Fair that we, too feel for the
cause, and will give means towards it I ,
This is no merely local matter. , AVS cordially
inrite the donations , contributio.s, aid and co
operation. not only Allegheny city, Birming
ham, Allegheny county, and the State of Penn
sylva.nia, but 01 Ohio and all the StateLof the
Republic. The recipients of the care of the San
itary eon/mission are the soldiers of the United
States. without regard to what special State en
listed from, citizens or foreigners, old or young,
and without any respect to sect faith or color.
All who tight and are disabled in tho cause of
our common country, are embraced Lithe man
