Horse Thieves Overhauled.—On
Sunday night last, Madison Jones,
Isaac Ballou and Smith Gillespie were
arrested in Washington borough, in the
act of stealing three horses from the
stable of Mr. Jacks, , n, living near the
town. The men were seen to enter the
stable, take out the horses and ride off,
when pursuit was made and their cap
ture; effected. Jones and Ballou are
members of the notorious Jones family,
one of whom, Charlotte, was hung in
tulecity for the murder of her uncle and
aunt. The thieves were committed to
prison for trial. Jones and Ballou are
both Penitentiary graduates, and the
chances are promising now that they
will be sent back to their old quarter's.,
An Act extending to the county of Allegheny

letter from West Virginia, dated the 21st ,
inst., says: General Averill, who has
been lying dangerously ill fpr several
days past at the United States - Hotel,-in.
Martinsburg, is now considered out of
danger by the physicians in attendance
on him. At one time the general was so
low that he was given up by his friends.'
The general's complaint is hemorrhage
of the bowels. The fact of his beint so
low created quite a sensation in the de:
partment. Many officers and citizens
hastened to Martinsburg to see him '(as
they had_ reason to believe) before he
