THURSDAY MORNING, MARCH 24
Great Sanitary Fairs
Sanitary fairs are now the great move
ments of the day, and the success which
has attended some of them is a striking
proof of the liberal and patriotic spirit
which prevails among all classes of the
people. It has been the subject of ad
miration at - home as well as wonder
abroad. Seven of these great fairs have
been held and the result is given in the
following figures. Chicago, $80,000;
Boston, $140,000; Cincinnati, $245,000
Albany, $32,000; Brooklyn, $100,000;
Cleveland,
$00,000; Buffalo, $40,000.
Total, $1,002,000. Raised by the volun
tary gift and efforts of the people, inde
pendent of the taxes and other expenses
of conducting a great war. In New
York it is expected that one million of
dollars will be raisedby their fair, which
commences in about a week. In Phila
delphia the wish is to equal New York,
and from the spirit with which the work
has commenced, we should not be sur
prised if our fair turned out as great a
pecuniary success. One is to be held in
Baltimore on the 19th 01 April, and one
at St. Louis on the 17th of May.
The usefulness and benevolence of the
labors of the Sanitary Commission are
manifest on every battle field And hospi
tal of the country. In the West, this
Commission has immense floating hospi
tals, upon which nearly twenty thousand
skit and wounded soldiers had been con
veyed from the battle field and hospitals
of the South to Louisville, to Memphis,
to St. Louis, to Keokuk and to Alton.
The aim of the Sanitary Commission is
to help every suffering soldier without
regard to nativity or the regiment he be
longs to. In view of these facts shall
not we of Pittsburgh show to Boston,
Cincinnati, and all other cities which
have preceded us in the good work, that
we cannot be outdone in patriotic efforts
to minister to the comfort and well being
of sick and wounded Union soldiers, no
matter in what locality they may be.
Whither are We Drifting?—The
Ledger of Tuesday, in its money article,
gives the following facts, which, we
suppose, are as applicable to this meri
dian as Philadelphia:
The exhibit by our hanks for the past week
shows that they are steadily swelling their bu
siness. All the items, except specie. show a
large increase over those of the previous week.
The loans have increased $456,215; the legal ten
der notes $1,330,744; the deposits $323.653. The
circulation increased a few thousand dollars,
and the specie decreased a few dollars. With
banking of this character, it is not surprising that
the currency is very much inflated and that all
prices steadily advance, and as stock affords the
readiest outlet for the employment of this sur
plus money. the) naturally advance more stead
ily and more largely than almost any other com
modity. A comparison of prices on the stock
list at intervals of ten clays, shows more plaini)
than almost any other test, the great cheapening
of the currency and the apparently large profits
realized from the purchase and sale of stocks
