was to soar and spread so luminously.
At the last session of. Congress $600,000
were appropriated, to

persons embarked from Fortress Monroe,
destined for the Isle of A-Vache, belong

the passage of these unfortun ite people
to their land of promise, the small-pox
broke pUt amongst them, which fearfully
decimattl their number. After their ar-

explodes,another Abolition experiment
with the nnfOrtunate African; what the
next will be Heaven only knows. But
if the destiny of the African race in
America be left to those who now claim
to be their especial protectors, they will,
like the Indians melt aways until they
become utterly extinct. So that in the
blundering of the present Administra

policy, which if carried out will termi-
nate in the absolute destruction of a race
which Abolitionism is now laborintr to
place, upon an equality with itself.

A Danish Iron-clad in Action.—
The first trial of a monitor in Europe
took place when, on the 18th of Febru
ary, the Danish iron-clad turret battery,
Rolf Krake went to Ekensund to attempt
the destruction of the Prussian bridge into
Broager (about which our special tor
respondent telegraphed us at the time. )
We have now received authentic infor
mation about the result of this trial which
was most satisfactory to the monitors.
The Rolf Krake was under a constant
fire from the land batteries, on three
sides, for nearly two hours, yet when
she returned to Sontlerberg, the ship tur
rets, artillery, machinery and every
thing, was uninjured, and fit to go under
fire again at any moment. There were
about one hundred marks outside of her
where the shot had hit the planting, and
some of the crew had been wounded by
pieces of shells bursting just over the
gratings in the top turrets. The reason
why she had to return was that the water
was so shallow she could not get near
enough to see the bridge, which was pro
tected by a projecting piece of land, and
consequently she had to fire at the bridge
at random, without being able to judge
of the result. she, however, succeeded
in 'doing considerable damage to the
enemy.—London Times, March 2.
Death of a Noted Man.—E. Meriam,
