San Francisco, Marche I.— The
steamer Pacific has sailed for the north
ern coast with over a thousand passen
gers, bound for Idaho gold mines. The
emigration in that direction by overland
has also commenced on a large scale,
considering Ihe earliness of the season.
Coal and crushed sugar have declined
in price.
The Ponora Democrat says that great
uneasiness prevails .among farmers
throughout that State concerning their
crops. Very little grain has been plant
ed, while we in Sonora have been more
favored with rain than in other portions
of the State. The prospects here are
gloomy indeed.
The legislature ha 9 passed a hill re
quiring foreign Insurance Companies
doing business in California, to deposit
bonds amounting to $7,500 for each
company, with the State Treasurer.
Washington, March 2.—Representa
tive Spaulding, of Ohio, has been ap
pointed a member of the Committee of
Conference on the disagreeing amend
ments to the whisky bill, in place of Mr.
« ashburne, of Illinois, vrho has left for
his ho me. Spaulding has heretofore act
ed with Washbume on taxing spirits on
hand, but as the Committee has been in
structed, that fact is of iio material con
sequence.
