The Disposition Never to Surrender the contrast for Independence—Wha t rik;ukter.s, Ci.-rgyo.on Writes—Let to reorn a silstisigulsheil Southern Clew.; ywars• From the ribsh The following letter was recently re-' ceived by a gentleman in this State. It, comes from a distinguished clergyman ofl Virginia, who was a strenuous "Union man," up to Lincoln's proclamation, call ing out 76,000 men to coerce the South. The writer is no politician, but earnestly devoted to his profession, and the senti ments be expresses are important and in teresting, as showing the state of public feeling in the South : I have Just returned from a visit to our army in Northern Virginia, where I found a wonderful presence of religious interest and. I am persuaded, of a genuine work of God's Spirit. In the 21 Corps, once the lamented Jackson's, the corps chaplain told me there wore fifty sermons preacher' every evening the weather permitted, to immense congregations usually, and amidst melting seriousness. This great work is done partly by chapitins and partly by missionaries from the churches at home, who are usually distinguished pastors. The reported conversions are counted by thousands, and I have it from the highest source that.. the discipline and ateadinese of the army are vastly improv ed since last year. The tyrant will find that these penitent, believing, rejoicing sot lets, will he terrible adversaries to meet to battle, fighting, es they are, in he holy cause of their country, their homes and their altars. I think the state of feeling among all of our respectable people is this: In Jane, the repulse before Charleston, the *to of Lee's army, the hope that he would be able to do something effective In Penneylvania or Maryland, had en• conraged the more sanguine among as to fisheye, and all of us to hope, that the radioal party in the United States would speedily became hopeless and tired of the war; and that the day cf peace was there fore beginning to dawn. The capture of Vicksburg, the repulse at Gettyburg, the persevering resumption of the siege of Charleston, have convinced us that this hope was dashed; that is, that an early peace can not now be expected; and that we must return to thews expectations which we had entertained previously, during all of 1862. Those expectations were that the population and reacuroes of the United Soots being 83 much greater, we should have to win our way to inde pendence, by a long and leafleting de fensive warfare, patient endurance, and r hard fighting ander disadvantages. The eeveinierFtatf.-tbe early manner or - 18881iffdl encouraged Cle to flatter ourselves with a more happy and speedy snecess.. It, was pelaful and bitter to give up the fist:firing hope, and return to embrace the old prospeet of the long continuance of our trials, and that proapect darkeecd still more. The feel ings of ail cf is were dashed by this,. and of score discouraged for a time. But the people are nerving themselves again to their task. They feel that after the fell of New Orleans, they had all made up their minds to the necessity of a stshborn, patient, determined, defensive war, with all its etifferirrei that this spirit bore them through 1862, and laid the foundation for splendid partial triumphs; that they mast recur to it again. relin gelatins this more pleasing hope of a speedy peace through happy cffensive operations; and that this spirit will bear them through the remainder of 1868 and 1864 as it did thro ugh 1862, and win the prize in the end. All sensible men feel that submission is imp - esiblc; that the intensely wicked and malignant spirit bar ored by the Brack Republican party, and more and more manifested, leaves them no alternative whatever but to fight it out A Philosophic Darkey. to the bitter end.a. The London cerrespondeut of the Phil adelphia inquirer, in speaking of the Heenan and Xing prize fight, sayer "The recent contest between Heenan and King was pre eminently a character istic one. Six months ago it was publicly announced, and the time for it to take place definitely fixed, so that the thing was not done in the dark. A week only before the day of the fight the sporting journals summoned the intended specta tors to be in readiness on a fixed day; and, therefore, the officials of the land are unable to say that they were taken unawares. The law prohibits these est& bitions by special enactments, and pro-, vides penalties for ail those aiding or abetting them. The municipal and rural police throughout the kingdom have strict standing orders to prevent each meetings: The press reprobates their occurrence, statesmen denounce them, and clergymen of the established Church preach against them, and 'ct on Friday morning last, before daylight, an' additional farce of policemen were sent to the Southeastern Railway station, at the request of the company, for no other purpose than to assist in packing a train of thirty four carriages with travelers, whom they and . everybody else knew were going to a cer tain locality to aid and abet a Pints fight The very statesmen olio. in their places In • Parliament, so londly descried the. perpetuation of this ancient national in stitution; the very editors who had writ ten and .published the most passionate appekls to itie community to frown down any future exhibition of the kind; aye, and the . very persona who had anethema• deed the prize fighters and their associates &o their PelPilet or, at" least, repre sentatives irorttall.thearsclainiesi - net " 0111 7 - in fitter defiance of the law, but actually assisted by the officials whose bueineas it was to prevent their journey, made their way to a spot where was to occur a scene unrivaled since the days of the Roman gladiators, and infinitely more disgusting and repulsive than any sight ever witnes eltil at any bull fight in ancient or mod ern Spain. Ido not exaggerate when I say the spec's - ors of the fight between Heenan and King were - chiefly composed of members of both Houses of Parlia ment, statesmen in and out of office, offi• cent of the army and navy, men of wealth, ecincati:n, and generally of ordinary re finement; in short, there were very few present who are not socially recognized as members of the two great classes, the nobility and the gentry. The price put upon the tickets tor the excursion viz: fifteen dollars, effectually excluded the ordinary 'roughs' from all participation in the days sport.. This was so intended.
