of the members elect to the 38th Congress,
appending to each a short biographical
sketch. Following is what is said of
Messrs. Morehead and Williams:
J. KENNEDY MOREHEED,
boro on the Snsqnehannah river, Pa.,
in 1806 ; received a limited education ;
spentthe most of hisyouth on a farm and aa
an apprentice to a tanner ; was one of the
contractors for building the Sasquehannah
branch of the Pennsylvania Canal; was
the originator of a passenger packet line
on said canal; in 1836 he removed to
Pittsburgh, and there took an active part
in improving the the Monon
gahela, and was made President of a com
pany bearing that name, and established
in that city the Union cottoa factory ; in
1838 he received the militia title of Adju
tant General, and subsequently, taking a
great interest in the business of telegraph
ing, became the President of several tele
graphic companies. In 1859 ho.was elect
ed a Representative from Pennsylvania to
the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving as a
member of the Committee on Commerce;
was re-elected to the Thirty seventh Con
gress, serving as Chairman of the special
Committee on National Armories. Re
elected to the Thirty-eighth Congress.
THOMAS WILLIAMS,
Was born m Greenaburg, Westmoreland
county, Pennsylvania. August 28;h, I*o6 ;
graduated at Dickinson College in 1826 ;
studied law aud came to the bar in 1828 ;
settled in Pittsburgh, from which place he
was sent, as Benator, to the State Legisla
ture in 1838-and the three following years;
in 1860 he was re elected to the lower
House of the Legislature, and in 1862 he
was elected a Representative from Penn
sylvania to the Thirty eighth Congress, j

lowing order from the Assistant Adjutant
General e office, at Washington, in rela
tion to extending the time for enlistment
in the regular army to June 26, 1864, will
be found interesting to volunteers and re
cruiting officers throughout the country:

time for enlisting recruits in the regular
army, under the provisions of General
Order No 100. of.) uni- 26, 1863, and No.
33b, of October 16, 1863, current senes,
from tins office, is hereby extended :o

Barney Williams in Trouble —Bur
ney Williams, the comedian, has
been prosecuted in New York for assault
and battery by a literary gentleman named
Watson, who alleges that being a guest at
Mr. Williams house, ihe latter uncere
monionaly left the table, thereby offering
an insult to him. Mr. Watson spoke in
severe terms of this circumstance to some
of Mr. Williams’ friends. The actor sub
seqnently met the critic at a concert in
Irving Hall ; an altercation ensued, which
respited in the Irish comedian striking the
plaintiff on the face with his flit. He has
laid his damages for the indignity and
abraenre at. $lO,OOO.
Manchester all Right.— The citizens
ot Manchester held a meeting on Saturday
evening for the purpose of devising ways
and means to provide for the families of
absent Boldiers living in the borough. A
motion was made as to the propriety of
paying a snm equal to the amount assessed
for borough purposes, (whichis five mills)
to constitute a relief fund, which was
unanimously adopted. A fter the transac
tion o( some other business, the meeting
adjourned to meet again on the 26th ist.,
at seven o'clock.
Election of Officers.— The stock
holders of the Fi.-st National Bank of
| Allegheny held a meeting Tuesday for the
election of Directors, with the following
result : T. H. Nevin, C. C. Boyle, R H.
Davis, Arthur Hobson, D. N. White
John Thompson, W. Harbaugh, Henry
Gerwig and John Denn. The institution
being now fairly arganized, will prooeed
to business in a few days. The Iron City

that they were regularly elected, in accord

or four from Mo., one from Va. and one

Messrs. Pendleton. Davies, Wadsworth
and Pomeroy, were appointed tellers to
conduct the election The House then
proceeded to vote with the following re
salt: Whole number of votes 181, neces
sary to a choice 82 ; Colfax, 101 ; Cox
42; King, 4; Mallory. 10; Stibbins, 8-
Dawson, 12; Blair, 2; 3tii P 3, 1. ’
Iho clerk declared Mr. Colfax dnly and
legally elected. The announcement -as
greeted with vociferous applause. Mr.
Dawson and Mr. Cox were appointed a
committee to conduct the Speaker to ths
chair. The Speaker, on taking the chaii,
delivered a brief, eloquent and patriotic
address which was received with general
applause.
On motion of Mr. Foote, a resolution
was adopted appointing a committee of
three on part of the House to wait npon
the President of the United States and in
form him of the readiness of Congress to
receive his annual message. Messrs.
Foote, Trumbull and Nesmith were ap
pointed.
The credential of Mr. Connes, of Cali
fornia, were presented by Mr. Nesmith,
and the credentials of Mr. Henderson of
Missouri, by Mr. Foote. Messrs. Con
ne4 and Henderson were qualified and
todk the oath of loyalty prescribed by last
Congress.
Mr. Davis raised a question as to the
right of the gentlemen from West Virginia
to take seats. He held there was consti
tutionally and legally no snch State as
West Virginia, there could, therefore, be
no senators from such a State. His ob
ject was simply to put on record his ob
jections; he believed the old State to be
intact and that thiß whole thing is a fla
grant violation.
The members of the House were then
sworn. The names of the members from
Louisian being called Mr. Stevens object
ed to their being sworn.; A. considerable
discussion ensued when Mr. Stevens of-

nothing later from Knoxville. Sherman’s
forces are pretty well up by this time, and
information ot Longstreet’s retreat is
hourly expected.
The Commercial s Chattanooga dispatch
of the Gth says : On Friday last the rebel
cavalry forces attacked onr forage wagons
near Harrison, twelve miles from Chatta
nooga capturing twelve or fifteen.
Advices from Kingston state that Bher
mau b expedition had Longetreet hemmed
in, with a poor chance of his escape.
Boats now run to Kingston.
General W. D. Whipple succeeds Major
General Reynolds as Grant’s Chief of
Staff. Reynold’s takes command of the

several fords of the Rapidan. Onr forces
kept on the alert, and everything was in
readiness to retreat if an assault had been

the enemy crossed over two or three regi
meets at each ford, and took possession
of the north bank of the Rapidan and onr
old signal station, so that they can now
overlook all onr movements while we re
main posted aa at present.
Eight of Moseby's guerrillas were cap
tured by onr cavalry scouts within three

Gen Meagher, who waß with the army
as a visitor to his old brigade was captur
ed in citizens clothes, near Mine Ran,

Potomac, December 6th, says: All is
quiet with the army, and the prospects

Alexandria, and the army is being well

It is ascertained that Lee occupies his
old position South of the Rapidan, and is
preparing winter quarters.
