This presumption is straug'hentd by the

Great Salt Lake is gradually diminishing,
bnt this is not the case -, it is.now reduced
to a basis of fixed causes which will give

The .melting snow of the mountains swells

Jhe 'Uentftoe tie check' reached New!
Yotk,»nd was dnly paid by the bank up_J
on which it was drawn, and after more I
than a month had passed, it reached, in
dne course of bank exchanges, the bank
in Boston, where the oheck was purport
ed to have originated. .
Then came the development, tor tne
cashier of the bank denied having drawn
any check in favor of the Baid parly, lor
any such sum, but on reference to his
bocks, found that he had drawn one tor
the same party and date, °
twenty-five dollars, and the check bad been
altered in so skillful a manner as to excite
• no suspicion. ,
The shrewdness of the operation ib also ]
apparent from the fact that the original
check was obtained from the New England
Bank in Boston, which is, in the language
of the banks, the correspondent bank ci
the one in this city, where the check was
eashed. r ~ .
