DAILY DOST. from, ibp CincuinJitl Enquirer. ABOUND THE EM** 11 ’ Around the hearth we’re sitting. The fits bums warm and bright, Thftehadows above are flitting In its weary flickering light. Without the wind is blowing, And the pattering rain drops tall; We are heading not their murmurs, Nor tha winds unceasing call. Our little world’s within— Oar joys and sorrows here ; The forms of the loved are around— There’s not a Sorrowing tear. No tears I ah, would it were so ! There’s a yearning within the heart, And we shut our eyes and pray That the shadows may Boon depart. And why should gloom enshroud Oar happy hearth to night ? The wind blows cold and chill Our fire is warm and bright. Ah 1 yee, there’s a vacant chair near, And a voice is missed in the lay. One link from the circle is gone, One sunshiny heart is away. Of him to night we’re dreaming, Far out in the battle’s drear mart, Wondering if thoughts of home Are hovering arouod his heart. Are there not some tender memories Of friends who are far away . Does not a feeling of sadness Across his heart strings play / Is there not some dim old vision Of a happy hearth Btone dear, Where old familiar faces Gather in silence there ? Ah! yes —bat the wind is soft, And the fire is burning still; Here sits the little groan, A place for thee to fill. High Grovk, October, 1863. A Terrible Tragedy—Two Boys Shot by a Negro. From the Hannibal (Mo.) Courier. Our usually quiet city was startled yes terday afternoon, by a report, which proved.but too true, that two boys had been shot by a negro man—oue hilled and the othet badly wounded. Tho facts in the case, as nearly as we have been able to obtain them, are as fol lpvrt: Soon after dinner yesterday, a num her‘of boys, large and small, gathered at the building occupied as headquarters 01 the District Quarter masters on Bird, be tween sth and 6th Btreets. At headquar ters was a negro man, called Jim a con traband, in the employment of the gov-, ernttent It seems that the door was open, and the negro had a gun, or therS was a gun within his reach; and be had, either been showing it to the boys, or, as | some oi the boys say, hpd taken it from j its place and threatened to shoot tbs boys il they did not lesrve the premises. One statement is that the beys, or some of them, ran away, bnt soon'return ed, when the negro Baid : "how 1 will shoot yon sure.' 1 Another statement is that he was showing the gun to the boyß, oocking and uncockiDg It, supposing it to be unloaded. Ouo ol the boys seeing the gun pointed' towards 1 him ran off. and tojld the other bq* to run.' Whether intentionally or nat, the gun was discharg ed, and with the most terrible results. Jesse, aon'SrMTrWraorMcV ugh, an old resident of this city, was shot through the neck and killed instantly. The same ball (probably alarger one) also passed through the body of Henry Davis, son of Frank Davis, ot this place, entering Borne inches above the right thigh, passing entirely through, and coming cut Bomewbatto the right of the spinal column, inflicting a vary dangerouß, il not mortal wound. The boys were aged, we learn, about fourteen or fifteen years. The negro was speedily arrested and placed in the calaboose. While he svowb his entire innocence of any intention to harm the lads, we are told that his state ments as to how it happened are contra dictory.
