Single per year, in advance,
$1 60. The usual deduction made for

ib unusually interesting, and should be
sent to absent friends and our brave

nothing is so cheering to them as a large,
we.l printed paper from home, brim full

Among the festivals of Rome was one
celebrated in the early part of December,
and, called the Saturnalia When the
firpt Roman writers commenced their la
boi 3, this holiday of unknown origin and
enigmatical features eluded their means |
of research and piqued their powers of
conjecture. Various theories were inven
ted by the careless and repudiated by the
candid. Finally the learned agreed wtth
the vulgar, and accept-d the tradition
which placed its institution amoag the
masteries of the Etrurian era, and partially
explained its peculiarities by referring
them to that period of the world when ■
Saturn reigned, and all men were pure,
I blameless and happy.
In performing acts of devotion during
this festival, the priests reversed ordinary
sacrificial usages and officiated with uncov
ered heads. But the great and marked
characteristic of the celebration was a
complete confusion or abeyance of all
social distinctions ; equality waß more
than attained, for Lhe slave sat at table
while the master obseq iiously waited upon

had a practical existence late as the
year 1640, for there is exiani a*, tu-count
of a regular celebration held at Aix in

manifestation was in 1626. We do not
violate probability in assigning nearly
1000 years as the period of its existence,
and we instance it. here, because its his

bearing which our readers will readily

Although no similar observance can,

Some form of thanksgiving for the ben

We regret that Noah Webster, in adding
to his definition of “Thanksgiving’’ the
remark that “ Ihe practice of appointing

fall short of the requirements for at least
a Dictionary recognition. Puritanism,

the genial gleam amid their legacies of
gloom, may forgive the parsimony of re
