Dedication di the Cemetery of tiqe H
roes- ittr.iEverett'a Oratto aJ
'he oration opens with an allesion to
the law of Athens, providieg that lineral
honors, at the public expense e shotald be
given to the remains of those Mae* who
fell in battle. Special honor was bbstriw
ed upon those who fell at Marathon, be
cause it aepended upon the event of that
day whether Greece should live.! They
alone were entombed upon the spot which
they had forever rendered fameus. Their
names were inscribed upen the monumen
tal tumuli:Li whioh covered their ashes, and
although the columns, beneath the hand
of barbaria - violence and time, have lon g
since disappeared, the venerable mound
still 'marks the spot where they fought
and fell.
14 5 '
He recurred to the events of the three
days on which depended the life of this au
gust Republican Union, and the invitation
from the executive\ bf,the great Central
State of PecnsylvanieC, seconded by the
Governor of eighteen other loyal States,
to pay the last tribute of ,reepecti to the
brave men who, on the let, 2d and 8d days
of July last, laid down their lives for their
country on these hillsides and the plains
spread out before us, and whose remains
have been gathered into the cemetery
whick we consecrate this day.
He spoke of what ould have been the
consequence to the country, if those who
sleep beneath our feet had failed in their
duty on those memorable days. We owe
it to them, that not merely the fields of
Pennsylvania and Maryland were redeem
ed from the presence of the invader, but
that our beautiful capitals were not given
up to threatened plunder—perhaps laid in
ashes—Washington seized by the enemy
and a blow struck at the heart of the
_
nation.
After an allasion to the thrill of joy that
passed through the nation on the itch of
July, when the news of the :all of Vicks
burg and the repulse of Lee's artup was
Tanned through the land. Mr. Everett'
proceeds to give a long, minute and vivid
description of the battle of Gettysburg;
and the events that immediately proceed- 1
ed and followed it.
The orator then discussed the rebellion,
and the pernicious dectrihe of States'
Rights which led to it, and argtiedthat
the only mode by which to end it is by a
vigorous prosecution of the war. 'ro
those who say that the Union cahoot be
reetorecl because of the exasperation
pratibed by theivar, he - mild fill t there l ,
was as much bitterness in the beginning,
of it as there is now. He added: At Ch.. ,
present day, if there is any discrimination
made by the confederate press is the al
tected scorn, hatred and contumely with
which every shade cf Opinion and semi
meatihe loyal States is treated, the
bitterest contempt is bestowed upon those
at the North who still speak the language
of compromise, and who condemn those
measures of the administration which are
alleged to have rendered the return of
peace hopeless.
Mr. Everett proceeds then to consider
the great rebellion in England in the 17th
century, the Thirty Years' and Seven
Years, Wars in Germany, the various
Lalian wars, the French civil wars, ell
of which have not prevented the respec
tive countries from becoming greater and
more united than ever,
The oration concludes as follows:
The people of loyal America will never
take to their confidence or admit again to
a Share in their Government the hard
hearted men, whose cruel lust of power
has brought this desolating war upon the
land, but there is no personal bitterness
felt even against them. They may live, if
they can bear to live after wantonly caus
ing the death of so many thousand
men ; they may live in safe obscurity be
neath the shelter of the Government they
have sought to overthrow, or they may fly
to the protection of the governments of
Europe—some of them are already there,
seeking, happily in vain, to obtain the aid
of foreign powers in furtherance of their
own treason. There let them stay. The
humblest dead soldier, that lies cold and
stiff in his grave before us, is an object of
envy beneath the Mods that cover him, in I
comparison with the living man who is
willing to grovel at the foot of a foreign
throne for assistance in compassing the
ruin of his country.
But the hour Is coming and now is,
when the power of the leaders of the re
bellion to delude and inflame must cease.
There is no bitterness on the part of the
masses. The people of the South are not
going to wage an eternal war, for the
wretched pretexts' by which this rebellion
is sought to be justified. The bonds that
unite us as one People, a substantial com•
inanity of origin, language, belief and
law, (the four kreat ties that hold the so
oietieteuf men together), common nation-1
al and political interests ; a common his-
tory ; a common pride in a glorious an
emery ; a common interest in this great
heritage of blessings ; the very geographi-
cal features of the country ; the mighty
rivers that cross the lines of climate and
thus facilitate the interchange of natural
and industrial products; while the wonder.
working arm of the engineer has leveled
the mountain walls wnich separate the
East and the West, compelling your own
Allegbauies, my Maryland and Peonsyl
vania friends, to open wide their everiaat
tug doors to the chariot wheels of traffic,
and travel; these bonds of union are of
perennial force and energy, while the
I cantles of alienation are imaginary, factl
tenet and transient. The heart of the
People, North and South, is for the Union.
Indications, too plain to be mistaken, an
nounce the fact, both iti the East and
e r est of the atee iu rebellion. In North
Carclina and Arkansas the fatal charm at
1-cgth is broken. At Ral igh and Little
Bock the lips of honest and brava men
are unsealed, and an independent press is
unlimbering its artillery. The weary
masses of the people are yearning to see
tae dear old flag Boating again upon the
cepitols, an d t h ey sigh for the return of
t h e p eace , prosperity and happiuess which
they enjoyed under a government whose
power was felt only in its blessings.
And ne w, friends, fellow citizens of
Gettysburg and Pennsylvania, and you
from remoter States, let me again invoke
your benediction, as we part, on these
honored graves. Yon feel, though the oc
casion is mournful, that it is good to be
here You feel that it was greatly an
soicious for the cause of the country, that
'se men of the East and the men of the
West, the:men of ningLetzt sister States
stood side by side on the perilous ridges
of the battle. You now feel it a new
bond of union, that they shall lie side by
side till a clarion louder than that which
marshaled them to combat, shall awake
