'1 HE WEATLIER.--Ali signs are said to
fail is "dry weather... Bit now that it
say b truly said we have "wet weather"
and the signs are in favor of a flood in the
river, we are inclined to think that they
will be verified this time. Rain h•is
been falling steadily since Saturday even
ing, and there is scarcely a doubt but that
we shall have a fine coal boat rise. Should
our anticipations prove to be correct, it
will be a great relief to our coal men,
many of whom have large investments in
coal awaiting a rise to enable them to reach
the Western and Southern markets. And
the benefits that will accrue to our friends
below will be incalculable—the dreadful
"coal famine" will pass away, and mat
ters and things generally resume the even '
tenor of their ways.

AL INTELLIGENCE
New Horse Railway.
We understand that the company char•
.ered for the purpose of building a pas
seeger railway from the southern end of
the Monongahela bridge, to a point some
where on Sawmill Run, intend commen
cing operations on the work soon, In
conversation with an intelligent gentle
man on Saturday, a resident of Temper.
anceville, he informed 08 that the people
along the whole line which the projected
road will traveirse, are extremely anxious
for the prompt completion of the work.
A great majority of the people residing
along the river, and for miles up Sawmill
Run, purchase their groceries, marketing
&c., in Pittsburgh, and they complain both
of the inconvenience and cost to which
they are at present subjected in getting
them conveyed home. It is contended,
and very plausibly, too, that if the horse
cars were running on the south side of the
river, connecting at the end of the bridge
with the Birmingham road, that all light
packages could be readily conveyed oh
the regular passenger cars, in custody of
the owners. The gentleman above allud
ed to is of the opinion that the interests of
the road and people would be alike bens
fitted by running a freight car over — the
road once or twice a day for the purpose
of carrying bulky articles. At present
the cost of drayage and ferriage are a
heavy tax upon the people, from which
they would be measurah'y relieved by
running the proposed tre,ght car. The
population along toe lice of the projected
road now numbers thousands, and is rap
idly iricreasing. When the road is hula,
if due regard is had for the accommodation
and convenience of those to whom it must
mainly look for support, there is not the
shadow of a doubt but that it will be.
come a prosperous and paying institution.
We trust the company will push on the
work with all possible dispatch, and that
the people of Ternperanceville, and regit n
roundabout, may soon have direct com
munication with Pittsburgh by •horse
rail "
ERDICT IS THE MARY BUREE MURDER
CASE. — About five o ' clock on Saturday
evening, the jury in the case of the Com
monwealth vs. Stepleion, charged with the
murder of Mary Burke alias Mary Mc
Kee, came into Court and rendered a ver
diet of MURDER IN THE SE( OND DICGRFE,
at the same time recommending the pris
over to the extreme mercy of the Court.
The prisoner—who is a fine looking young
man — heard the verdict without betraying
any visible emotions of either satisfaction
or regret. The jury, who bad deliberated
upon the case for some sixty hours, were
discharged with the thanks of the Court.
and the prisoner was remanded to jail,
to await his sentence, which he will prob
ably receive on Saturday next. There is
a moral connected with this case that is
patent to every one, and should he pon
dered upon.
ilia)rderousi Assault—Supposed
Attempt at Highway' Robbery.
On Saturday wet, b...ween tea and
eleven o'clock. a merderou3 assault was
made upon the parson of Mr. Thomas
Rattigan, European Agent, No. 122
Water street, by four men as he was cross
ing over Hand street bridge, on his way
home. He was conveyed to the Mayor's
office, where his wcuuds were dressed by
Dr. Murdock. His situation is so critical
that he is not allowed to converse with
any one, hence the facts in the case can'
not be fully ascertained. It seems, how
ever, that when he had reached the mid
dle& the bridge he was suddenly assault
ed by four men, one of whom struck him
a severe blow on the head with a bar of
iron. Mr. Rattigan, in attempting to de•
fend himself, caught hold & the iron bar,
which, on being wrenched Cm rn him,
badly lacerated his hands. After he was
felled to the fi)or by the blows of his as
sailants, he wan kicked in a severe and
brutal manner. The blows on his head
with the bar of iron fractured the skull,
which, with other injuries, renders his
situation very critical. The fact that the
parties who committed the assault on Mr.
Rattigan did not take either his gold
watch, or money he had on his person,
has led some to conclude it waea personal
grudge, and not money, which led to it.
But our opinion is that the scoundrels
were alarmed by the approach of some
one before they could r ffect their full pur
poses, and that had n- e tim. been allow
ed them they T, .:.1 : nnly have taken
all that w.. rFr,rn, but
seem it ev have
robbed it in wh:eli ,vrni they would
have secured several hundred dollars, all
of whkh tile son of the irj iri , d man found
in the safe and removed yesterday.
LIBEL SCITS. —lt wail whispered about
town yesterday that Mayor Sawyer had
instituted suite for libel against the editors,
proprietors and " locals " of the Chroni
cle and Gazette. We shall see what we
shall see. .
