MACDONALD'S Diarmime.
BY GEN. WM. N. I.YTLE.
The following poem Wes written byithe
late Gen. Wn.Lima LYTtE, about 'eight
years since. The incident whiphlinggest,
ed the verses is related in .HEADLiVEI
"Napoleon and hie Marshals." •
A drummer bny from faießeyoune,
By love of glory lured,
With bold MACDONALD'S stern array,
The pains of war endured,
And soon amid those dizzy heights,
That girt the Sp!nen dread,
The silsmt column struggled on,
4nd be marched at their bead.
Then in those regions, cold and dihs,
With endless winter cured,
The Alpine storm arose, and scowled••
And forth in fury burst—
Borst forth on the devoted ranks.
A •Lhitious. danutiess brood,
That thus with sword and laric profaned,
ti;kl Winter's solitude.
Down ! down ! upon your faces fall,
Chug to the guns! for In,
The chamois on this slippery track
Would dread yon gull below
So sped the word from front to rear,
And vt.tt7t6ttP, to the stor-rn
Bowed low, who t.e . er iu battle bow,A,
To aught in foernan's form.
But hark I what horror, swelie the gale—
Beware, oh sous of France,
Beware. the av al., ,he whose home
Is 'mid these mountain haunts,
You distant thunder—'tie its v....ice !
The brav•rst held his breath,
And silently a prayer put up
To die a soldier's death.
And near, and nearer, with a roar,
That loud and louder swelled,
The avalanche, down glaciers broad,
Its lightnii g pathway held ;
A nd ; hrougb t he shivering ranks it crusLcd
And then with one vast stride,
Swept down the gulf, till far below
Its muttering thunder died
lu vain halia's Bunny plain
And reeling vines invite,
Full many a snldier found his shroud,
•Mid Alpine snows that night ;
And ho, hie comradoe' pride and boast,
The lad from fair Bayonne;
The roll was called, no voice replied,
The drummer boy was gone.
GOIM Roue' but hark trojn the abyss
What sout.il4e, - i faintly come.
Amid filo pauses of the storm?
It ,s—ie :s —the drum:
He live , . he beats for eid, he sound,:
The pld i imiliar call,
That to t':e bist,teries . smoking throat
Had brought his comrades all.
rer 'he dizzy verge that eve,
With straining eyes they peered,
And heard the rattling of the dram.
In accents strange and weird ;
The notes would cease, and then again
Would sound—again to
Until no more their fainting moan
Came waited on the gale.
And when red Wagram's fight was fought,
And the big war was o'er,
A dark haired matron in Bayonne
Stood watohingat the door ;
Stood watching, -praying, many an hour,
'Till hair and heart grew grey,
For the bright-eyed boy, who, mid the Alps,
Wu sleeping tar away.
sud still, belated peasants
How, near that Alpine height,
They hear a drum roll loud and clear
On many a storm•vezed night.
This sto y of the olden time
With sad eyes they repeat,
And whisper by whc le ghostly hands
The spirit drum is beat.
Unconditional Loyalty
This phraea originated with the Church
of England Cavalier party in the days of
James 11. That organization contended
that government was a divine right; that
no matter what the king might do, the
duty of the subject was to obey, not to op
pose or resist; that if men believed hie
measures wrong tLey might prey to God
to inspire him with wisdom, and endeavor
to persuade him of his error; but that at
such point legitimate opposition ought to
end. This theory was admirable and son•
ple so long as Dissenters and Whigs were
to be fined, imprisoned, and judicially
murdered. But, hey presto! a change;
the king began to attack the church in its
conscience and property. The party that
preached lamb-like docility to others
showed the temper of a lioness bereaved
of her cub, and William of Orange soon
after occupied the seat from which James
had been driven.
. -
There is no such word as —uncondition
al" applicable to any of the relations of
life. The tie between man and wife, be
tween parent and child, between subjects
and a Government, between states in a
federal compact, is conditional. No man
or community can abjure law and claim
law ; none can omit to perform the obli-
gations of a contract. The Administra
tion bears the same relation to the United
States as a hack driver does to a hack
owner. Its nusiness is to drive, not to
dictate ; and the reasoning which con—
founds the Administration with the Gov
ernment is just that which would confound
the captain of a steamboat with the steam
boat company. If a majority of the peo
ple of the United States were hereafter to
form a political party for the purpose of
assessing the expenses of this. war upon
certain prominent Republicans and upon
the Eastern States, we apprehend that the
Times and Massachusetts would not find
“unconditional loyalty" quite so Merits.
ble as at present. We have greet doubts
whether Massachusetts would not talk
secession and state rights as loudly as she
has befpre done, and we mistake the spirit
of the old Bay itate it she would not call
her sons around her and strike alone for
independence.
There is no more necessity of uncondi•
tional loyalty on the part of the people
than on the part of the rulers. Indeed
much lees. Mr. Lincoln might have fin
ished his lour years without an opposition,
if he had simply been content to perform
his functions as his predecessors had per
termed theirs in times of war. He did not ;
be chose to assume that in time of war
the President betimes dictator, with
power of limb and property, and he abw
lately kicked the. Democracy into an op
position. And of Wad has the opposition
complained? Of violations of the Corlett
cation. What has it asked? Obedience
