SALES OF REFIXED Ott-.-By refereuce
to our market reports a heavy sale of refin
ed oils will be noted. It will be better an
deretood by the general reader when we
state that the one in qestion was sold in
the months of July and August for future
delivery. The parties purchasing, in con
sequence of the decline in price of the
article, refused to take it, and hence the
re-sale of the oil by the original owners,
at the risk of loss to those who had for
merly purchased it. The sales amounted
to some 2000 barrels at pribes ranging from
40 to 4.3 i for "Brilliant" and "Standard"
brands. Another sale of 800 barrels is an
nounced to come off at the Oil Exchange
for day.
CHIEF JUSTICE LOWRIE —lt is a dese•.rt
ed compliment to this eminent jurist that
several thousand more votes should have
been cast for hiin than for the regular tic
ket. Hie career on the bench has been so
honorable and so datisfactcry to the bar
that the members of the profession voted
for him, to a great extent, without distinc
tion of party. "It is not much to the
credit of our system of an elective Mice
ary," Bays the Philadelphia Age, " that
one so worthy and so deserving as Judge
Lowrie should lose his position at a time
of life when he is best fitted to grace it,
and when a return to the active duties of
his profession, if necessary, must be oe•
cessarily very distasteful. The labors we
impose upon our jadicial officers are of
the most onerous character, and the com
pensation we give is pitiably inadequate,
while the tenure of office is such that just
as the services of a judge become of the
most value, he is. liable to be supplanted
by another. Had it been left to those
most competent to decide upon the rela
tive fitness of the two candidates, there
would have been no doubt as to Judge
Lowrie's re-election : acid it should be a
source of gratiflcatiou to him to kr/ow that
he will carry with him from the bench the
esteem and regard of all who hare ever
appeared before him."
TROTTING MeTcH eT COLLINEI PAU..
On Tuesday next, Noqember 3d, the
great trotting match between "Shamrock' .
and "soft Soap" comes off at Collins
Park. This match, it is admitted upon
all hands, will be one of the most exci
ting and best contested races which has
come off this season ; and as autumn is
far advanced, may be the last trial of
speed until next spring. Mr. J S. Beit
ler, of East Liberty, enters "Shamrock,'
who, although distanced in the last twv
contests, will, in the opi mon of his back
ere, de,betterunder the management of Mr.
Beitler, who knows how to handle the
ribbons, and bring out the sues l , •t its
horse. S. Keys enters -"Soft Sonp," an 1
we suppose he, too, will drive hi„ own neg.
There will doubtless be a very large at
tendance on this occasion, 3.8 the moo
is exciting much interest. The pr.itc
be contested for is a premium of s4' i—a
snug little lam, and worth striving at
THY Etna. IILNGEEL9.—Thib talented
troupe give their first entertainment at
Concert Hall, on Monday evening. The
majority of cur citizens have doubtless
heard of this company, and many have
witnessed their excellent entertainments
in the past; yet, but few know how really
excellent and attractive is the entertain•
meet proffered by them now. Years of
experience, earnest, enthusiastic tabor,has
given them a proficiency which tells in ev•
ery matter they undertake. Ae bell ring
era they eine', and their corps of instru
mental artists are products tr , 110 the beet
European academies of mmai^, We advise
all or oar readers to go and hear them, as
they are well worthy of ),,IT patronage.
They also give afternoon ct tortaiitinc, ots
for children and ladies who cannot attend
in the evening.
ALLEOZD FILAITI I . — Two meu named AL
kinson and Collister were before Alder
man Neillie, on Thursday evening, on a
charge of obtaining two cows under false
pretences. The prosecutor, Mr. Neely,
keeps a tavern on the North Common,
Allegheny, and alleges that the defend
ants, some weeks since, taking advantage
of his sickness, visited hie house and
informed his wife that they had pur.
chased the cows from him, Neely, and
upon this. assertion they were allowed to
drive them away. It is also alleged that
they disposed of them and pocketed the
proceeds. Mr. Neely denies having made
such a sale, and therefore institutes the
suit to recover his property.
and ATHLETES
ECONOMY IS WEALTH.—To save money
is an object with almost every individual:
but it is not our intention to write an es
say on economy, but to call the attention
of those wishing to purchase hats, caps or
ladies' furs, to the large and elegant as•
sortment of such goods at Fleming's, 189
Wood street. His stock of hats and caps
comprises all the late and most fashiona•
ble styles, while in ladies', Misses' and
childrens' furs, there is an endless Tillie
ty, from the most expensive to the com
mon grades. We would advise ladies in
search of furs, to call at Fleming's, 484
Wood street.
LIVINO IN NEW Yo .—A furnished
house which in August last rented for
$3OO, now readily brings $6OO per month.
Public houses have as mach as they can
do in accommodating strangers, and no
guests are accepted except with full board,
(three dollars per day,) and even then
transient custom is looked upon with most
favor. In Pittsburgh it is next to impos
sible to find a house to rent, and hotels
and boarding houses are fall. You that
have lots and money, set about erecting
dwelling houses at once The wants of
the community require them, and the in
vestment Swi l be profitable.

Annapolis, Md , Oct. 29 —The thg ci
truce boat arrived, this morning, from City
Point, with 182 'paroled prisoners. A
number died on board the boi.t on i.s way
hither. They v:ere actually starved to
death. Never, in the whote course of my
life, have I seen such a scene as these
men presented. for they were living skel
etons. Every man of them had to be sent
to the hospitals. In the opinion of the
surgeons more than one-third of them
must die, being beyond the reach of nour.
ishmeut and medical attendance. I
questioned several of them, and all state
that their cw3d,tion has been brought
on by the treatment they have received at
!Le hands of the rebels, they have been
kept without food, and exposed a large
portion of the time without shelter of any
kind. To look at these poor men and hear
their tales of woo, as to how they have
bean treated, one would rot suppose t;
