to death yesterday evening. The unfor
tunate child was stirring the fire in the

another victim to the wearing of cotton
clothing.

Jackson, indir was brought
to a close in t • jury found
the prisoner :.,com wended
him to the m• , f , h. Court. John
R. Forrest was ri •d on trial, charged
with secretingand embezzling letters while
postmaster at Perrino postoffice, ;Mercer
county. The evidence of the prisoner's
guilt was oJve, mid a verdict of con •
viction was rendered. He was next in
dicted. charged with detaining packages
passing through his cffice, in this case,
too, the jury found him guilty. He was
sentenced on the first indictment to ten
year's imprisonment in the Penitentiary,
and on the second he was ordered to pay
n fine of $ - 50 and undergo one month's
imprisonment in the same institution.
He wept bitteriy while sentence was be
ing passed, and was still in tears when
removed by the officer. His wife is yet to
be tried.
THIRD CHIIRCH.—Tbe members of the
old Third Church held a meeting on Fri—
day night, for the purpose of taking action
towards securing a suitable place of wor—
ship, made necessary by the destruction
of their church edifice by fire on Wednes—
day last. Communications were read
from a number of churches in Pittsburgh
and Allegheny, sympathizing with the
congregation in their disaster, and placing
the churches at their disposal part of each
Sabbath, and during the week, until such
time :Is their own edifice could be rebuilt.
A committee apointed by the trustees,
to examine into the suitability of the
public halls for the purpose, also made a
repr,it. After a full interchange of opin•
ions, the renting of a hall for the use of
the congregation was left to the discretion
of the committee.

DEATH FnOM EXPOSCRE. — Coroner Mc-
Cluntr, on Saturday, held an inquest on
the body pi a man named Robert Briggs,
who wan found dead or, the Monongahela
wharf. Peeeiased was a shoemaker by
trade, a,.d between seventy and eighty
yearn r f age. He was a dissipated char.
serer, and Friday night, being under the
II teuee of liquor, hr fell, it is supposed,
at the wharf, and died during the night
from exposure. Ho was found shortly
a'ter daylight Saturday morning, but life
was then exitnot, and all effirts to restore
a:dmetion proved in vain, A verdict
of ..b.ath from exposure was rendered.

inst., arrived here this evening, bringing
the following intelligence
New Orleans, Oct. 17.—Dstes from
Vermillionsville up to 10 o'clock last
night, elate there has beau skirmishing
nearly every day for a week, without any
casualties on oar side. To day we took
six men and-the enemy about the same
number. The enemy's force in the vicin
ity is estimated at about 2,000.
The rebel salt works in the vicinity of
Point Ciear, Mississippi Sound, have been
destroyed.
Gen. A. J. Hamilton has arrived in the
city, and will address a mass meeting, on
political affairs.

The United States steamer Tennessee,
destroyed four schooners off tho Texas
coast. They were heavily loaded with
ammunition and stores for the rebels.
The old flag again floats over the Bayou
Teche, the obstructions in the Bayou hav
ing been removed by our naval forces.
Gov. Shipley has modified the order for
registration of the loyal voters in such a
manner that all loyal citizens may be reg.
islered as voters upon taking the oath of
allegiance, and making declarations that
such oath is taken voluntarily and,for the
purpose of establishing a government loy
al to the United States.
Ad vices from Texas say that Matamoros
is still unoccupied by the French, and that
the people of Texas.and the Confederacy

The Memphis and Charleston Railroad is
in running order from Corinth to Bear
Creek.
Gem Herman and staff had left for the
front, and indications of operations were
apparent.
Geri. Ripley, chief of ordinance, had
paid the department a flying visit.
Gen. Dodge had returned from leave of
absence, and azautned command of the
left wing of the 16 . 11 Army Corps.
Gen. Sweeney' B command sent in pur.
suit of the rebels from Lagrange, were
expected to return next day.
Thirty Michigan cavalry had returned
from a successful scout, in which they
killed, wounded and captured a number
of rebels.
FORTRESS MONROE — Oa. 25. —Yester
day's Richmond Dispatch received here,
contains the following:
Charleston, October 23 —No new move
ments yet. The Yankees are reported to
be riveting, smoothmg and pu.ting the
finishing strokes to Gregg, Wagner and
other batteries at Cummings' Point.. The
fleet remains quiet ; stormy times are
expected soon. The number of Yankee
prisoners held in Richmond previous to
last night, was 12,000. The following
dispatch appears, signed by R. E. Lee and
Gen. Imboden : On the 18th inst., we
attacked the garrison at Charlestown,
on the Shenandoah valley, capturing 434
prisoner with their arms, &c.
NEW YORK, October 25 —A Washington
letter to the Post says :—Despatches bore
give reason to believe. that the quiet at
Charleston is soon to be broken. Much
intereot is telt in the fleet about the rebel
torpedoes, and the strictest watoh is kept,
particularly at night, over the movements
of every thing that floats on the water.
Our own boats are sometimes fired into
by mistake, so careful are the ironclads
to keep off flowing torpedoes.
NEWARK, N J , Oct. 24.—While Mr.
Rogers, of Susses county, was addressing
a meeting at Deckerstown, last evening,
some missiles ware thrown in from the
outside. Mr. Rogers retorted in loud and
eevorelanguage. Soon atter, the building
was set on fire and entirely destroyed,
with an adOining sable containing seven
teen hcrses, two of which belonged to Mr.
Rogers. Loss $30,000.
NEW YORK. Oct. '24.—Gen. Walbridge
publishes a triumphant reply in the Her•
ald this morning, to the recent attack
upon him , by the London Times. Gen.
Walbridge charges that the Times no
longer represents the sentiments of the
English masses, who are opposed to the
action of Lord John Russell in placing
the broad arrow on the rebel rams.
WASHINGTGN, Oct. 24 . —N0 Butlers are
now with the Army of the Potomac, they
having, during the late campaign, been
ordered to the rear, and the reatriction
has not yet been removed.
There was nothing positively known,
up to yesterday, of the 'whereabouts o
Lee's army.

Charleston on Tuesday evening and brings
