A Snake in a Man's Stomach.
A physician at Orenkoldsvicke, in hie
official report to the Royal Swedi 3 / 3 Sani
.
tary College, narrates the following,:
• A peasant from Trehorningssjo Kapell,
visited me at the beginning of this year
to consult me regarding an unwelcome
guest that had got into his stomach, naffie•
iv, a snake. Daring a journey he had
slept one night in a wicker basket that
stood upon the floor, - and all at once he
awoke feeling something which resembled
a cold, live body sliding down his, throat.
;He remembered that he had seen some
large half decaye.d logs brought in for the
r fire place, and at once bethotight himself
that very likely a snake might have been
=Concealed in one of the holes of these
logs, and during the night had come out
to seek a warmer dwelling by sliding down
the sleeper's open mouth into his atom.
ach.
This idea became quite rooted with him.
When he got home he took epsom salts
and aloes in numerous doses, but the
snake which at once notified its presence
by sucking just below the abdomen-(!) was
not brought to light. After this the poor
sufferer drank at once half a gallon more
of another mixture, but with no avail.
Had he more, he said, he should have
- drank more. Now he drank a quartern of
nitric acid mixed with three pnts of water,
but equally unavailing ; the •snake only
grew still mor3 restive. Next, a sort of
soap was znade of thin, eour ale, and the
juice from tobacco pipes which had not
been cleansed for more than a year. Cold
sweating, retching ; and at last vomiting
followed, but the man only got worse.
We now tried, assisted by two friends,to
kill the snake by squeezing it to death;
and he and his friends continued during
nine hours to knead away and the snake
really became more quiet for twenty-four
hours,
but that was.all. After having
drank severarquarterns of turpentine to
no 'dee, an attempt was made at angling
foe. it. A sort of fish-hook was made of
iron wire, and a lump of dough, compos
ed of flour, the whites of eggs, treacle
and batter, was put on as bait. The hook
fixed to a string was swallowed, and after
about half 'ins hour, a "bite ' was felt, and
the string was therefore hauled in, and
the patient could distinctly feel how the
patient clung to the hook ; but unfortu
nately, just as it came to thelorge, it let
go its hold and' down it 'sank again into
the stomach.
The next attempt was still more un
fortunate, as the hook got fixed in the
- • •
-on ,ave .een "thought that
this would have induced the patient to
give rip any further attempt at angling ;
but no,'a third attempt was made, and an
extra tackle' fixed at the hollow part of
the hook, to be able to get loose if it
should fix again. This time the snake
would not trite at all ; the hook was
drawn up bare, and all further attempts
at angling relinquished. Quite in despair
the peasant now consulted me, (the physi
cian spoke of above) and I tried to rea
son with him, it was of no use, he clung
to the idea. I have since learned that he
has consulted bothysicians and others,
and he was at last obliged to return home
unalleviated. When he got home, he be
came addicted to drink, which, after some
time, has actually cured him.
Terrible Fight Between a Grizzly
Betr4 .Ainzalas.
A correspagtierit of the Portland (Ore
gon) Times, writing from Banncek City, in
the .Ikiise mines, Idaho territory, tells, the
following story, which may be believed
by those who are fond of wanders :
A terrible fight between a mountain
ammiss and a grizzly bear witnessed by a
small party of mountaineers a short time
since, on the road leading from here to
Lewiston. The party had stopped to
camp for the night, when suddenly wild
and terrific screaming and fearful sounds
burst upon their ears, indicating a deadly
combat bet Ween two forest monsters. The
scene of action was near, but out of eight.
The Ratty were'ailent listeners during the
desperate - conflict, the sounds of which
'Struck terrorto the stoutest hearted moun
taineer. Finally 'the sound died -away—
the conflict was ended. An hoar of silence
elapsed, and the party ventured slowly
and cautiously toward the spot, from
whence those doleful sounds enunciated.
As they neared the spot, the victorious
ammiss passed before them into the jungle.
On coming to the place of the deadly
struggle, they found dead and bleeding a
large she bear, that would weigh proba
bly 900 or 1,000 pounds.
The grizzly was bitten through and
through the neck, and fearful gashes were
inflicted on the body, laying bare the ribs
and shoulder blades, surpassing the effects
of repeated strokes from a heavy cutlass
or bowie-knife. It seems that the ammiss
desired to make a meal of the cub, to
which the she bear objected, hence the
`fight ensued; and it was sach a fight as
mortal man scarcely ever witnessed, and
none but bears and lions participate in.
The mountain ammiss is an animal half
way between an African lion and Bengal
tiger. It is described by a mountaineer
as follows: "His form is much like the
lion, being very heavy before and light
behind, with a perfect lion's tail, but
lacking the mane, though the hair forward
on the neck was longer than on the rest
of die body has a round ear, dark streaks
around the eyes and up and down the face,
also running down the legs. The body is
some darker in color than that .of the
lion, and free from stripes. His foot is a
lion's paw. This beast of prey has lately
been discovered in these mountains, and
the animiss is a wonderful animal—no
doubt the king of beasts in the forests of
Idaho. When his angry voice ,is heard,
the beasts of the forests crouchingly seek
their hiding places."
