Information of the trans action was given the police, but thus far they have been unable to find any trace whatever of the thief. We are inclined to believe that this bold thief is none oth• E r than that accomplished rougno, Gold• smith, a printer, who has lately been do• ing a thieving business about the city in and the way of "cutting" in his board bills,' "relieving" his fellow boarders of clothing, watches, money, ito. • - - CHURCH RosaElty.—On Tuesday night some persons entered St. Peter's Catholic Church, Anderson street, in the Fourth Ward, Allegheny, and robbed the safe in the vestry. Access was gained by means of a ladder from the outside, put up against a window in the body of the church. The window was broken suffi ciently to let a man pass in. The thieves then passed to the vestry where the safe was located, and with a heavy crowbar they forced open the safe. It is believed that, in addition to the damage done by the crowbar, a blast of powder was used, as the safe was completely wrecked. The crowbar was left, in the church. It is about five feet in length, and it weighs seventeen and a half • pounds. It is not known what the thieves obtained, as Father Mullen, the pastor of the church, is absent from the city. THE FIRE YESTERDAY.—At the burning of the Third Presbyterian Church our Fire Department did nobly ; yet we must notice the •'Hope of Allegheny. This beautiful and powerful engine took her stand in Second street, and by the aid of other Hose companies, kept two streams on the old Journal Building andschurch. We cannot ut derstend, after the citizens of the First Ward purchased this fire en gine. why the councils of Allegheny still refuse to give their Hose. enough to ren der their engine effective, but leav e th em dependent on the different hose companies for a supply. Citizens of Allegheny sholtid look to this. CITY NE C onflagration --- Third Presby. - terian Church in Ruins About 10 o'clock yesterday morning a fire broke out iu the third story of the old Journal building, on Third street, oc capied as a manufactory for patent roof ing by the firm of Boyd, Morrow d: Glad• den. There was a large amount of corn bustible material . in the room and the fire spread so rapidly that in a few minutes the building was enveloped in flames.; The alarm was given, and soon the fire companies had their engizes on the ground. lint the fire had progressed so far as to render its destruction inevitable, and had also caught the roof of the Third Church adjoining, the greater part of which was now in fl sines. From the roof the fire extended to the steeple, and in a few minutes it was, from base to summit, enveloped in a sheet cf flame. Everything was done by the fireman to save the church, but without avail. The fire con• tinned to extend steadily uulil it seized upon the entire building, and one hour from the time it broke out but little be yond the bare walls remained. The fire around the spire burned fiercely, and fears were entertained that it would topple over into the street and crush some of the spectators. Apprehension on this ground was BOOD ended by the fall of the steeple, which drcierbed down into the body of the church, but without injury to any one. Beyond the church, the flames were not permitted to extend, and by noon they were extinguished. The Third church was one of the oldest of our ecclesiastical buildings, and its history is intimately connetced with that of the Old School branch of the Presby terian" .Church in Pittsburgh. It was erected in 1832. and cost some $3O, 000. Rev. Dr. Riddle was its first pastor, and preached there for a period of over twenty five years. He was succeeded by Dr. Kendall, during whose ministration some $9,000 were spent in alterations and repair. Rev. Herrick Johnson followed Dr. Kendall. An organ, costing $2,000 fell a prey to the flames A portion cf the furniture was removed, but the loss will reach $40,000. There was a bell weighing 3,500 pounds in the tower, be yond what the metal may bring, is a to tal lose. There is an insurance of $20,000 on the building and $1,200 on the organ, divided between the following offices : The North American ss.ot'Po, Franklin $5,000, Allegheny $5,000, Western $5,000 and $1,200 on the organ in the West. ern. 'This, it will be seen, will hardly cover half the loss. It was in the vicinity of the Third church that the great fire of 1845 broke out, and but for the extraor• dinary exertion s made to save the baild ing, through which the flames were to some extent checked, the territory tr.,' versed by the flames would have been Far more extensive : yet, today, when no danger is apprehended, the fiery element seized upon it, and before the fact cat , well be realized, it is reduced to a hear of ruins. lThe budding in which the fire broki out was owned by Mrs. Riddle, mother o the late Robert M. Riddle, a four story brick, and is a total loss. Oliver Chesser, carpenter, occupied the flr,,t floor, and lo6es about $6OO. Charles Glenn, tobac conist, occupied the second floor. His loss we could not ascertain. The third floor was occupied as a manufactory for patent roofing, as already stated, and the fourth was vacant. The fire is said to have been occasioned by the upsetting of a pot of inflammable matter in the hands of one of the workmen employed in the third story. We are informed that the venerable Dr. Riddle is in the city, and that he was a witness to the destruction of the noble edifice in which he so long and so accept- ably labored. A Hold Thief. Eben White, of tle 7th 11 S. Colored Regiment, which is now being organized by Col. Birney near Ben edict, St. Mary's county. The perpetra tor was Col. John 13. Sotheron, a promi— nent slave owner of that county. The Lt. with a squad of his company was sent by Col. Birney to Benedict on Monday to ob tain recruits, hearing that Sotheron had `wo of his slaves tied to keep them from enlisting. The Lt. proceeded to Sather Or-I'S house and ordered the men to be re leased. Sotheron and his son refused and abused the Lt., and threatened to shoot him—both being heavily armed Lt. White then left and proceeded to a field where several of Sotlieron's slaves were at work, followed by the father and son who de 'mended his object The officer replied that he was there to enlist all that were so disposed. Atter some more abuse, the Sotherons declared they would kill the Lt., and fired their guns upon the officer, who‘fell mortally wounded. His body was brought here last evening and for— warderfo his friends in Mass. The two Sotheron's escaped. lissEtviu.s. Oct. 20th.—Gen. Mega and staff arrived th.s evening, and reported that Gen. I accordingly dispatched a brigade of cavalry around by Vogeraville to intetcept the enemy's retreat, and with a considerable body of infantry and ar tillery moved to Bull's Gap. On Satur. day, the loth inst., I advanced acavalry brigade to Blue l-prings where he enemy ene a my was strongly posted and offering snbbor n resistance. Skirmishing continued until about five o'clock p. m., v he] I sent in a division of infantry who crargeo and cleared the woods, gallantly driving the enemy in confusion until dark. Dur ing the night, the enemy retreated precipi tately, leaving their dead cri the field and most of their wounded in our hands. We pursued them with infantry and cavalry. The intercepting force met them atEenderson's, but owing to a mis understanding, withdrew and:allowed them to pass with only a slight check; the pur suit was continued until evening, when I withdrew most of my infantry and returned ;0 this place. Gen. Shackleford, with hie . . cavalry and a brigade of infantry, contin tied the pursuit of the enemy, making a stand at every important position, but he has driven them completely from the State, captured the fort at Zollicoffer, and burnt the long railroad bridge there, and a few other bridges and destroyed 30 locomotives and about 35 care. His ad vance is now ten miles beyond Briatol Our loss at Blue Springs and in the pur suit was about 100 killed and wounded. The enemy's loss was considerably greater, about 150 prisoners were taken.
