LI Died of a Broken Bean At the time the subject of the draft was• being agitated in Washington, a young man employed at the navy yard, in order to avoid being drafted, came to New York cad enlisted in the naval service, and was assigned to the United States brig Bainbridge. He had been married not long previously to a young woman of Washington, who loved him intensely. The Bainbridge sailed,-and atter a time the news came that she had been lost with all on board. The lady, whose husband was among the devoted crew, was immediate ly prostrated by the shock which the in. telligenee produced, and she betook her self to her bed and utterly refused all the consolation that could be offered. She re fused to partake of nourishment, and it was obliged to be administered to her by force. At I : a report came that the ill fated vett,, t woe not lost. It wasli mis take she was safe; she 17118 not lost. So the atm y came, and the glad tidings wereim• parted to the young wife. She arose from her bed, arrayed herself as usual, and was rapidly regaining her health and cheerful ness when the counter report came—the terrible eorfirmation that the Bainbridge was really lost with all her crew. Again she was prostrated, took to her bed, and refused to be comforted. Her friends de spair of her recovery, and she will proba bly die a victim to her aff.....etion for him whose love to her was more than r. Commercial. A Humorous Incident on the Ken tuoky Central Bear oad On yesterday a humorous mistake oc curred on the passenger train of the Keu• tacky Central railroad. In the fourth seat back of the stove, in one of the pas• senger cars, sat +a gentleman and lady, sweet and gushing as the fairy ones of olden times. His arm encircled her waist in bearlike squeezing ; his one hand toyed with her ribs ; his other hand wandered around her amplitudes and bonnet strings like a 'oat child in a berry-patch, seeking a place to rest, and his eyes were fixed on the face of his fair companion with all the earnestness of a Romeo, In 'short, they were the observed of all observers. In' the first seat back of the couple alluded to eat a demurely looking lady, naturally interested in the display of affection in front of her, eo natural and touching. When the cars entered the tunnel, three miles back Of Covington, the gentleman was standing by the stove for a moment. When part way through, and while all was dark as night, he groped his way back, and just as the train began to emerge into the least glimmer of light, was a yell _ - too far back, had seated himself in the wrong seat, and was trying his beat to kiss the demure lady, who couldn't see it l He lit out in a hurry, and with the most sheepish look we ever saw, took his place beside the girl, while the spectators were convulsed with laughter.— Cis. _Enquirer, Remarkable Longevity. We are indebted to a friend at Miller's Landing, Mo., for the following statement in reference to an inhabitant of Franklin county, recently deceased: Michael Shookman, who died Septem• ber 8, 1868, at his farm in Bawl township, Franklin, Mo., was born in Loudon county, Va., in 1759, making him 104 years old. He was 18 or 17, July 4th, 1776, when the Declaration of Indepen dence was adopted. He married and had several children there. He then rempved to Tennessee. He came to Missouri about 1880, and has remained here ever since. He has ever been an industrious, good citizen, and has raised a large family. He died, leaving twenty-two children, eighty-two grand children and thirty great grand children. His oldest child is over eighty and the youngest eight. years old. He had doubtless more grand children and great grand children, but the family are so scattered that many of them have not been heard fromfor years.—St. Louie /is/nib/icon. • Hazel Eyed Women. Major Noah said a hazel eye inspires at first sight a Platonic Gibraltar. A wo man with a hazel eye never elopes from her husband, never chats scandal, never sacrifices her husband's comfort to her own, never talks too little, always is an agreeable and lovely creature. We never knew says a brother editor, of but one hazel-eyed woman who was un interesting or unamiable, and she had a nose as we Yankees say, that looked like the little end of nothing whittled down to a pzint.. The grey is the sign . of shrewd. ness and talent. Great thinkers have it. In woman it indicates a better head than heart. The dark hazel is noble in its significance, as well as its beauty. The blue is amiable, bat may be feeble. Tile black—take care there is thunder and eightning there HERNIA OK RUPTURE CURED.
