CITY
Where Will It Stop?
To tho calm obE,rv, - r of pa4sing events
it would seem that a portion of cur peo
ple bad suddenly become bereft of reason,
common sense and the plainest dictates
of justice. - The time was when men could
differ in opinion upon political matters,
and their right to do so would not be qua.-
tiened. Now, the matter is different.
The dominant political party in this ruin
ty and the State have set up a soil of in
quisition, and very man in the OOLIIMII
pity who (keel ...t think and vote upon
political gine. inra at they do, is forthwith
placed upon the rack, and unless he re
cants what his Bed - appointed inquisitors
are pleased to term his political heresy,
he is at once guillotined. This proscrip
tion is carried into ti of busi
nHis, and even into our institutions of
learning. It ee ems that, Rev. I. C. Per
shing, President ot tile Pitt.i.inirgh Fetna!e
College, on Hancock street, in the exere
cise of his just rights us alt American cit
izen, saw proper to vote for Ge,o. W.
Woodward for Governor. This exercise
of a legitimate right of every freeman, at
once excited the ire of Ibe itquisnorB,
aed it was forthwith deterinineo fo put

neurimation in question, is a bitter and
unscrupulous paitizsii, and will leave no
i means untried to accomplish the end he
has in view—the destruction of Mr. Per shing's usetuluess as President of the
flourishing institntion over which he pre
sides, and his rein:3ml. But we are glad
to know that there are still same men lift
among us who are not so blinded by po
litical prejudice as to 11,3 utiab!“ to listen
to truth, honor and Louet in a man,
even though he may be elect, in the ex

men are among our most
zees, and are fully d, termined that Rev-
Mr. Pershing shall net bit injured, either
in his private character or public calling,
for no other crime than tha,. of voting fur
Geo. W. Woodward. Mr. Pershing is a
most estimable man, an hble divine, and
a successful teacher, and nn man has ri
shadow of right to interfere with his prit
ilege of voting for whom be pleases.
Voting for Woodward is neither disloyal
ty or treason, and Rev. Pershing is to day
a more loyal man to the Union than any
one of his persecutors. We shalt watch
the reFult of this matter closely.

; St. Lours, October 20.—The Memphis
Bulletin of the 19th gives additional par
tic-tiara of military operations on the
Memphis and Charleston Railroad. Our
force at Collierville was lees than five hnn.
dred, without artillery, commanded by
Lieut. James, 3d United States cavalry,
a member of Gen. Sherman's staff, and
not Sherman himself, as previously report
ed. Opposed to us were eleven rebel
regiments, under Chalmers and Richard.
son, numbering, it is said eight thousand,
with nine pieces of artillery, Our loss
was fourteen killed, ninety wounded and
missing. Rebel loss about one hundred
and fitly.
During the pursuit of Chalmers by Col.
Hatch, the latter came up with the tormer
at Ingraham's mill three miles south of
Bay Halls. Where afrer two hours' fight,
the rebels were dislodged from a very
strong position, their guns being advanta
geously posted. and their infantry well cov
ered. The position was carried by Col. Phil
lips' br.gade, seventh Illinois and seventh
Kansas leading the charge. rho iTherny
lust upwards of fifty killed and wounded.
They retreated thirty miles sonth to 'I alla
hatchie, where they took ii. strong position.
In the little town of Wyatt a deep trench
was made entirely around the town until
reinforcements had arrived. The enemy
occupied the riverside with from thirty five i
hundr-d to fc ur thousand men, and nine i
pivot s of artillery: Col. EL.ii:h had about I
2200 men ; two brigades under Col. Phil i
lips and''Col. Merrier, and eight pieces i
of artillery in the center. A
The enemy mr.d,e two desperate , chat
gee o❑ our right, and left which were re.
pulsed with conpideraltie loss, they leav
irtg their dead iu our handy; night coir.-

0!-clock, Col. Batch charged on the town
and drove the rebel; panic—stricken intf,
the river laid liCrOtitl the bridge, lenving in
our band,: about three hundred rifles and
‘.•veniy- Live prwuuers. The town atter
wards was buried. During the six days'
fighting at.d skirmiuliingfrom the battle
of Colliersville to this last affair, about
100 rebels were killed, a large number ta
ken prisoners and a cot Aiderahle quantity
captured.
Little Rock advises of the 14 , 1 say:
The rebel army is scattered in every di
rection and an extraordinary renewal of
:fide sentimelif hag taken place h o g
the people. Thousands of men have

NEW YORK, October 20.—The Post's
Washington letter hue a rumor that ono
corps of Lee's army has gone to Chatty
noogn, but there are no actual facts upon
which to make such a statement.
It is talk(dofin military quarter. 4 that an
early repeal of the $.300 section of the Con
scription Act by Congress, be tirvid in
Haber, and it is improbable that in the
next draft exemption by money will he im
possible—some persiins advocate a new
fixii.g the exemption price as high as
$6OO or even $1,500, and providing that
drafted men who go to the army shall re:
cove the money so rldeed in their district.
This scheme is said to have originated
with Nlr. Chase.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 20.—The Govern

SUrnside that his marches were vietoriont ,
in East Tennessee and Southern Virginia,
and in almost every case the rebels have
been whipped and routed. Gen. Baru

East Tennessee.
PHILADELPB lA, Oct. 20 Rumors are
afloat that the military authorities here,
are making preparations for the transpor

HARRISBURG, Oct. 20. --NO such infor

WASHINGTON, Oct. 20.--There is prob.

that they have retreated across the Rapi

"But we are more pleased still with
Mr. Lincoln for having read several of the
plays many times over. It is far- better
for a man to rend one play twenty times
because he leec.i it, than to read twenty
plays once I ~,,•te they constitute the au•

There is much ir,dication of character, too,
in his selection of favorites. 'Lear,'
`Richard Ill,' Henry VIII,' Hamlet,'
and `Macbeth' would not be a bad library
for any man who would really make him.
self master of them ; and fur a ruler of
men who at the same time is a lover of
human nature and a quaint humorist, they
may well prove a continual least. The
choice of 'Macbeth' as principal character.
and tae preference of the less popular of
Hamlet's soliloquies, also indicate that
incisive use of hie own wits which is one of
the surest indications of a man of power.
"Long may Mr. Lincoln be able to find
solace and enjoyment thus pleasantly and
profitably ; and may he never lack moral
courage and graceful courtesy to do honor
to those who by illustrating the great
dramatists do almost all that is done ef
fectually to keep them popularly alive.
In Mr. ❑ackett' s ease the honor is doubly
due. as many of our readers are a,:are.
Not only is he a brilliant and uric ions
