' The following appeal comes from true and tried soldiers of the Army of the Po tomac, who will not be furloughed to come home and vote. It-is genuine, forwarded to ns by as brave a man as ever faced an , enemy. IfC t DQUA I,TFt 69, ARMY POTOMAC). ) .I.‘ II LLYNI . YEB., A., - Sept. 28,1563. To the raters of Pennsylvania : FRI-LOW CITIZENS CF PENNSYLVANIA:— We ask your attention, while we say a few words in relation to the election soon to take place. The Democracy of the Army of the Po tomac enter tileir solemn protest against the course pursued by the friends of A. G. Curtin in the State canvass. A certain class of newspapers are filled, weekly, with resolutions purporting to have their origin in this army, endorsing the actions of Gov. Curtin, and urging his reelection, on the ground that he is the -"soldiers' only real frierid." A few of these resolutions are genuine ; but the ma,it, of them are manufactured at home -olitical effect," T Aer in which the vote is taken ": , ,solves that are sent from the army is this : "All opposed to the resolu tions step to the front of the company." Is there anything fair in this way of taking a vote ? Is it an honorable way ? Is it not an imposition on the good judg• ment and intelligence of the soldiers comprising our army ? Why was not the "affirmative," of the question voted upon first ? Why are they baked in with other unexceptional resolves? Why were they not submitted fair and equare to the men ? There is, no doubt, 'good reason for it. rhe officers who get them up know what they are about. They know very well that, if the question was properly put, they would be voted down, and it was necessary to couple them with other resolves in order to blind the eyes of the unsuspecting soldier. Why were not the resolves published with the names of the officers who were instrumental in getting them up and passed Are they afraid or are they ashamed of the deed ? This looks bad. We denounce such acts as unfair and frandulent. No good can result from such outrages upon the "right of suffrage" as exercised by as in the field. ' Fellow:citizeiis, be not deceived ; these resolutions endorsing Curtin and recom mending hie re election, are not the true untrammeled sentiment of the soldiers— th,-y are forced from them—not enter ta•ned or voluntarily given. Had we the legal and constitutional right to vote here in the field thousands of the votes that have been fraudulently recorded for the Curtin resolves would be east for Judge Woodward for Governor. Judge Woodward comes up to the full requirementS of the Jeffersonian creed— "He is honest—he is competent." Can this be said of A. G. Curtin ? Has not Curtin sold the honor of your State for his own personal and political advance ment? We pause for a reply. Curtin it is said, has done a great deal for the Pennsyl vania soldiers ; bathes he done any more than the law required him to do? Every man in the State who pays his taxes has done as much for us as Curtin has. We know very well that he claims to have done more than any other Governor in the Union for the army. If he has we never knew it, and he got well paid for it. We appeal to you, fellow-citizens—to all true lovers of the Union and the Con stitntion—all who love law and order, and all who are willing to sacrifice time and money, and life, if •need be, for the preservation of the old fabric—to vote for the great statesman and patriot, the sol dier's true frieud, George W. Woodward. i r In by-gone days we looked to you for aid and support, and you gave i! with a willing heart and a liberal hand, We ask you again for support—we appeal to you to redeem our native State from the thial. dom of Abolitionism. You owe it to the army that have twice saved the old Key stone from being overrun with the hell hounds of rebeldom—who are braving danger all the time for the glory of the old flag—who have on every battle-field, from : Yorktown to Gettysburg, fully main tained the honor ofthe old Keystone. We look to you to elect a good and true man to fill the guberrurorial chair of our good old Commonwealth. We are folly of the belief that Judge Woodward i s the only candidate capable of filling that position with honor to the nation and credit to the State. BELT & PRIEST. Real Estate Agents. St. Lon In conclusion we appeal—in the name of ihe Democracy o(the Army of the 10• tomac —to all good and true men to vote for' our true friend and supporter, George W. Woodward. MAST DEMOCRATS of the Army of the Potomac. An Incident of the War. Not long after the battle of Gettysburg, some three thousand soldiers had assem- I I bled within the confines of a mammoth chapel tent for the purpose of evening worship. A half hour had elapsed since the opening of the discourse when a ter rible clap of thunder burst upon the ears of the startled congregation, causing even the boldest to shudder at its power and volume of sound. The noise of the huge rain drops as they pattered upon the pa villion, was as the "long rolls" beaten by a hundred drums. In vain did the min ister endeavor to make his own voice heard ; nor was he permitted to do so, until the "heavens were bottled up," and the rain had ceased. A party of three young men standing near the entrance of the tent, having been particularly uneasy during the service, were observed to leave their comrades, one of them remarking as they stepped outside, " Let's go to our tent, I'm afraid of neither God nor devil.'' A short time only had elapsed, ere commotion near the door betokened that something unusual had happened. A tent had been struck by lightning, and a man killed. The body was brought in and placed near the centre of the tent. That body was all that re mained of the youth who had expressed his contempt of the Deity. There, palsied and cold, with distorted features and eyes glaring in mockery of .life, lay he, lately so buoyant in full health. Upon leaving the tent, the three young men had sought the shelter of their own 'small accommodations, and lying down side by side, prepared for sleep. While yet awake the bolt of Heaven had fallen upon them. The unfortunate youth whose soul had been required, had been singled_ DAILY POST. Thry, also, had received injury, but after a little time recovered and begged to Le led into the chapel tent, that they might commune with the chaplain. It was most affecting sight. There, in the pres ence of that vast assembly, before the re mains of that deceased_ brother in arms, these two young men snatched from the jaws of death, like "brands from the bunt ing," expressed their gratitude to God for His mercy, and their determination to do better in the future. The chaplain now addresaed the meeting, taking for hie text, 'lt is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living (od." And that mul• binds, s. , little used to tears, now sobbed almost an a body. The effect produced by that scene will never be effaced from the minds of those who were present. Many were the vows made by the soldiers npon that occasion, to recollect the text, and also to remember that "God will not bold him guiltless who taketh his name 3TI vain.
