the rescue. After a brief contest i„b
els found themselves at last matched, and
commenced giving way in theirlurn. Rey
nolds having nlso been to the assistance of
ihe centre after the repulse of the rebel
right, an advance was ordered, and our
original position regained about sunset.
About dark the enemy made another dem

last effort of the day.
New York, September 2G.—A Wash
ington special of the 25th to the Tima,
»ajs : It appears now that nil three of
Rosecrans grand divisions were engaged
in the battles in front of Chattanooga, two
of which were driven back in considerable
disorder. General Rosecrans, in his die
patches, tmpntes the loss of the battle to
disobedience of orders on the part of Gen
McCook, who failed to occupy an impor
tant position assigned him by G in . Rose
crane. Had be done as ordered, Rose
crans' opinion is that the battle would
have resulted in asplendid I'uiou victory
Grea' anxiety is felt here in army cir
cles for the safety of General Bnruside.
In order to reinforce Rosecrans, his only
safe course would be to cross the Tennes
see river and move down between the
river and the mountains, or to penetrate
to some of t.he gaps and move do>n be
bind the mountains.
General Hooker has been assigned to
an important command, in a field where
bis brilliant fighting qualities wilffind
their full scope.
