We had an appointment to preach in

on Sabbath, and we shall never forgot
the occasion. The house was well filled.
Loose floors had been laid on the top cl

straw beds so close as only to leave room
for the surgeons and nurses to pass be

pain, some asleep, some reading and oth
ere having their wounds dressed. As soon

ded and others. The speaker, a layman
of the Covenanter Church, made the most
tender and appropriate appeals to the suf
fering men. and closed by singing, • Am I

By the way. we several times met Captain
Frederick Stowe, a son of Mrs. Harriet
Beecher Stowe, at the house of Mrs. Xa
rah Mon!ort, in Gettysburg. He is a Ro
man Catholie. He wan fretinently visited
by a priest, for whom he sent, and on one
occasion desired to be alone with him in
ceremony. His wound was in the ear and
head near the ear, in reference to which,
on account of its location, he telt much
uneasiness, but he was soon convalescent.
This war ban done much to secure a growth
of kind feelings towards Romanis's who
have done well in the conflict whose btsh
tips and priests are sorne of then, -in g
the most loyal and efboient frier is ..t the
country. We are glad to know that Ito
man Catholics have been well represent•
ed in our hospitals, by labors and gifts
for the wounded. When the war is over
all will acknowledge that Ronianisis are
entitled to claim a share in the credit of
having preserved the Union.

thing of the labors .of. the Indiana Milita
ry Agent in behalf of his S•ate. Gover
nor Morton has done a good work in this
tipointment, and we may say, irony ex
pressions made in our hearing, that many
noldiers of other States envy the care and
kindness, and the saving of expense which
the Indiana soldier enjoys through this

tive of the character of Gen. Gilmore.—
It appears that under the regime of Gen.
Hunter, f irtiGcations had been construct
ed on Folly Island—an ominous name, by
the way. instead of being on the north
side of the island and pointing toward.,
the rebel works, these fortifications, on the
Gen. Pillow plan were ou the south side.
and pointed directly away from the enemy!
Gen. Gilmore, on taking command, im
mediately visited the island and discover
erecl how the land lay. Turning to one
of the engineers, he inquired:
"Hive you got this island moving on a
pivot 7"
There was no answer to the question,
but the hit was appreciated, -and Gen.
Hantar's stronghold on - the'sonth side was
neglected from that time.

A letter from Morris Islurid has tha fol•
lowing paragraphs:

lOn Thursday night last, about ten o'-
clock while Ensign Porter was officer cf
the deck, he discovered what he supposed
to he one of the Monitors moving rapidly
down the channel and towards his ship,
the New tronsides. Lie watched it close
ly as it neared him, and soon saw enough
to excite his suspicions that all was not
right. When she had come within speak
ing distance, be hailed her and asked
what vessel it was. The reply came, '`Ay,
ay, sir, all right.' As this was not the
proper answer to be given by any of our
vessels, be hailed again. The next an
swer was, "a live Yankee from Port Roy
al.'' He was then satisfied that she was
a rebel vessel, and he callei all hands to
quarters. The strange vessel continued
to move towards the Ironsides, and at
tempted to cross her bows or explode a
torpedo against her sides. liiit she failed
in the latter attempt, and only succeeded
in getting foul of the frigate s ram, which
stopped her for a moment, She .inally
got oil' and started rapidly towards Fort
Moultrie. Several guns wen, fired from
the frigate at her; but it was thought
none struck the audacious vessel, as she '
went off flying

even deserters, who escaped from Fort
Moultrie on Thursday night to the Mon-
Lank, besidife giving much other informa
lion, state that two blockade runners suc
ceeded in eluding tour v seta and ran
safely into Charleston last night. They
were discovered by our blockaders and n
red upon ; but the night was too dark and
misty that they were quickly lost sight of.
They were probably a portion of the largt
fleet due here from Nassau, with valnabie
cargoes. The nights are so dark and ha
zy now after the moon sets that it is an ut•
ter impossibility to see one of those lead
colored steamers, Betting low in the wa
ter, any great distance. fhey are seen (or
an instant, perhaps, and as quickly d;aap•
pear in the haze. The keenest vigilance
is of little avail under such circumst in•
cps. These make three that have tun in
since the occupation of this island. We
hope that the game will be blocked against
them in a few days.
After the Battle of Gettysburg.
The Medical Times publishes an inter
esting letter on this subject from its spec
ial correspondent with the Federal army.
The . , following is an extract :
The Gettysburg wounded were left to
the care of the country, and nobly did the
country respond to the call ; but it took
time for the wants cf the wounded to be
known, and for them to be supplied. The
immediate neighborhood of the scene of
conflict was unable to do anything, how
ever charitably inclined, since the con•
tending armies, previous to and after the
light, had used up everything eatable for
miles around. A large force of volunteer
and contract surgeons was the first assist
ance that arrived, and having had certain
of the wounded placed under their charge,
were soon made useful ; but the lint, band
ages and chloroform left with us began to
fail. What was to be done 'f We looked
at each other in dismay, when, lo relief
was at hand.
The supplies of all the difTerent associa
tions in the country poured in upon us
en masse, and in a trice we found our
selves elevated from a state of destitution
to one of luxury. Everything we could
wish for the wounded was now at our dis
posal. We now had a sufficiency of dress•
rag; we had blankets, shirts, drawers,
socks, soft pillows fo; stumps to rest upon,
fans to keep the :!.es away from those who
had strength enough to use them, and
musiinito bars for these incapable of doing
so. Food we now had fit for sick and
wounded men, and brandy, wines, and
fruits. Nor was even tobacco forgotten
by these kindly associations. A number
of ladies connected with them, enliven
our camps, and do more good as nurses,
each of them, than a dozen men detailed
for that purpose. '1 he wounded, the gov
ernment, the country, tan never sufficient
] thank the S.iriitary Commission, the
Clitiquan Commission, Adams' Express
li spiral Corps, and the many other
aas.J(iations which traniformed the great
scene of mi.;ery here to one of home-like
comfort.
The rebel wounded in our charge have
fared. so far as comforts and attention
went. as our own men fared. 1:-.fore our
supplies came up they made no complaints
—after their arrival tl oy declared they
hail not had such a gay time since the con•
federacv commenced to exist. The sari
geoirs, in bringmg their cases to the table,
never examined previously if a man wore
blue pants or grey, but looked simply at
the nature or the wour.d. find they been
within their own lines they could nut have
been so wed aticnded to. I have seen
Confederate wounded in the hands of
the Federal,, at.,l Federal wounded in the
hands of the rebels, and I cannot but say
that in acting the good Samaritan the
North bears oil the palm. At Chancel
lorsville the rebels removed their wounded
to be cared for at Richmond, leaving the
1200 Northern wounded to lie upon th•+
field. The rebel soldiers near them gave
them what help they could, but the rebel
government did nothing but confiscate the
captured surgeons' cases and hospital
knapsacks, looking upon them as govern•
merit prol , erty.
In the misery being represented to those
in authority. some, iur, bacon, and hard
bread were plentifully issued to the wound
ed. 't his was all, the v said. they could
give, because it all they had. Still,
they could have done more : they could
have removed these 11:-du wounded men to
Ilichmond along with their own wounded,
to fare as they fared they could have sent
a ti-tail of surgeons from their army at
Fredericksburg to attend to them ; and

away by rail—straw at least might have
been sent for them to lie upon. What
would have been said had the Vninnistg
acted similarly at Gettysburg '—had they
remor ed their own anurnied by rail, and
