DAILY POSTe From the U. S. Its.ilr3ad ar.d. Mieiuz Journal NOTES BY A T.RAV.t,LER. Pirrsauac, August 12, 1863. Left Chicago in the 7:15 train -via Fort Wayne for Pittsburg, on Tuesday, Aug 11. From the car window between the Indiana State line and Lima, Ohio, saw A.nrora, the goddess who breaks fast on dew drops, rolls back night's curtains from the Eastern sky, and decks the heavens in fleecy clouds in radiant colors for the corn ing of the morn, and for the rising of the orb whose beams bear heat and light round the circle of the earth. F4rty nine miles from the terminus of the road ia Pittsburg we crossed the Pennsylvania line and were again in the fieystoue State. Ar rived at Pittsburg at 2:80 P. M. Wednes day, Aug. 12, after a ride of 469 miles in 19i hours. The terminal site and plan of the Fort Wayne route, in Chicago, when all the-ne- cessary . structures shall have been erected and connections provided for practical co• opnrationi: will give the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad ansurpaes- Eid facilities for the accomodation and command of a still larger intertrade with other roads. Its unequalled freight connec tion with the Chicago and Norwestern Railroad, a masterstroke in design and execution, • practically puts Breen Bay M communication with the trio of tide water cities, via Fort Wayne and Pius burg Moreover, the truth is gradually gain ing lodgment in Chicago and hone region beyond, that, while the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad together constitute a direct unbroken line to Philadelphia, they'l:l4ly; at the same time, are the Ehica g o to New York. When the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad shall have its track way, appurtenances and appliances all put iu the condition oi excellence intended by its management and warranted by its in• creasing travel and swelling traffic, by which time, too, the vast region of the Northwest will appreciate and realize the advantage of seeing New York through Philadelphia, thereoy to er • joy the range of the two principal seaports over the shortest mileage in the briefest time, then will the Pittsburg route be preferred over all other routes between Green Bay and tidewater. The operations of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in Pittsburg add an other testimony of the expansion of the scale and proportions of tnis grand At lantic Trunk route. The day was intense ly warm, the sun sent down its vertical rays charged with caloric, between the columns of hot air from the forest of chi m- nerstacks that make Pittsburg a smoky, busy place. In our walks we saw work ing parties in the service of the Penusyl vania Railroad Company, on the piers of the progressing railroad bridge across the Monongahela river, to the Southern bank of which the teunsyivania Railroad is being extended, there to connect with the direct route to Steubenville and thence to Cincinnati ; alao on the new tunnel through Grant's Hill over the old canal tunnel, the arch of which, at the crown, at the South end, we were shown, in its place, twenty-eight feet below the grade of the railroad. The enbankment to the abutment c f the river bridge will cover and fore rer hide the canal tunnel to the Mon ongahela ; also on the foundation of the new:passenger depot which is to be seven hundrid feet in length-of which two huu dred feet are to be enclosed within walls. with cellar room underneath; the ground floor is also to be divided into compart mentafor offices, and for restnrant par poses for passengers the upper stories into chambers for use when trains fail to connect. Along the steamboat landing on the Monongahela in Pittsburgh, we counted scattered in the fleet of boats, eleven new stern wheel steamboats, double-decked, apparently ready for machinery and joinei work. We read in this sight evidences of a revival of the river trade and of the de termination of Pittsburgh not to relax its reliance on the Ohio river as an important artery of commerce. Pittsburgh is iden lifted with the river system of the West, and it is the interest of Pittsburgh to maintain a good.boating equipment on the Ohio river. The manifest prosperity of Pittsburgh gives us unalloyed satisfaction. Pittebnigh' r among the natural sites for cities west of the Alleghenies, possesses extraordinary facilities and advantages.— The future of Pittsburgh unquestionably will be guaged by its manufactures ; ana this interest, we believe, has always been fostered in the policy of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, the disagreements hitherto existing having been mainly with the commission interest—that interest which in years agone did bosiness over the main line of public works. Perinsylva Mans everywhere wish that Pittsburgh may become a great city and take rank with St. Louis among the cities of the Missis sippi valley, to which, Pittsburgh is the easternmost gate of entrance. The State has:Wgreat city on the Delaware and looks longingly and with solicitude for the rapid growtb, of a great city on the Ohio. Be tweell these east and west entrepots the Pennsylvania Railroad is an artery of ac tive and healthy commercial circulation, and sAie:of that political wedlock which maketi Op' 'commonwealth one community in industry, labor, law. Along ihe Allegheny river landing in Pittsburgh we saw some of--the barges em ployed in the oil trade . from the Venango oil welt region. Some Of these barges carry on deck seven hundred barrels of forty - gallons each, making twenty•eight thou sand gallons of oil. A bula-barge, that is 111 barge divided into water sign eom• partments, carries the oil in bulk in enor mous quantities, the advantage being that, if 'one compartment be "stove in," the barge will continue to float and preserve the remainder of the cargo. These barges are loaded at Oil City, on the Allegheny river at the month of ( , 11 Creek, to which place the oil is brought trom the wells in scows and on lighters. Left Pittsburgh at 8:50 P. M., Thurs day, August 13, thirty-three days from the date of our passage through It outward bound. $2 , 00 ...._ 2 15 .. .. 2 00 From Philadelphia to Ontonagon the round trip is made up of these distances: Philp&lphia to Cleveland by rail 504 Cleveland to Ontonagon by steam boat .1 , 80 Philade , pbis to Ontonagon— 1.584 miles. Add to this the total mileage travelled in the copper and iron regions, and the aggrPgate makes a flying visit of consider able proportions; truly this is a vast coun try of natural wonders and a prolific nur sery for multiplying States. ... , 50 From the Army of the Potomac, One of the New York papers has the fol• lowing : From the Army of the Potomac the newa is that General Lee is receiving large reinforcements, and is supposed to be preparing for another raid into Maryland similar to the movement of last August, which shortly preceded the battle of Antie tam. James Thompson, of the Third Mary land regiment, Twelfth corps, was to be shot to death with musketry io front of Gen, Warren's headquarters, for deser tion. lIFIPULSE OF WHITE'S 617 E RRILLAS The Washington Star says The rebel gnerriilas under White, for some time paLt have been the habit of visiting the neighborhood of Seneea Falls, and steeling the horses emoloyed on the canal. Col. BSker determined to put a stop to it, and, accordingly, with a detachment of his men, proceeded on Satur• day last to the Fall., and placed himself in readiness to give the enemy a warm re• ception. After disposing of his men to the best possible advantage the utmost quiet was preserved, and the enemy anx iously:awaited. After awhile they made their apr ear• ante, and to their utter consternation were greeted with discharge after discharge from the 'repeating rifles used by Col. Baker's ftrcee. In such rapid succession did the discharge follow each other, that the enemy no doubt thought that a regi ment was upon their heels. They quick. ly withdrew, but in a short while returned with reinforcements. Again were they met, and again as handsomely repulsed. During this last conflict a rebel lieuten ant was shot-dead by a ball from one of the rifles at a distance of nearly a thousand yards. A Lady Drafted troT ttfin p sfflgti . dritmeWeetrtry - tris. l is a Mrs. Slack, who says she has no wish to tarnish a substitute. Since the draft she has visited Gettysburg, where, guided by our soldiers and some of the rebel soldiers, she spent a week in examining the battle ground, hospitals, &c. Mrs. Slack is now ready to don the uniform and take position in line. She deserves and should receive a Major's commission. The manner in which Mrs. Slack was enrolled was peculiar. She has her name 'Slack,' with her initials, upon the door of her residence. The enrolling officer went to the house, and finding none of the occupants within, took down the name on the door plate enrolling it in the first class." Abundance of Prairie Chickens The Dubuque Times says that "never since lowa has been settled by the white man, have prairie chickens been as nu merous as the present season. In Bu chanan and Blackhawk counties they can be killed with stones and clubs; and bunt ing them with guns ie next to no sport at all. So plenty are they that all the farmers importune hunters to try. their luck on theirgrounds ; and in some in stances they have expressed a willingness to pay for killing. • NEARLY every gate in the city of Vickie• burg is now adorned with an unexploded 13 inch shell, placed on each post. The porches and pizzas also are ornamented with curious collections of shot and shell, which sell on their premises during the bombardment of the city by the Union forces. Tae greatest capture of men related in history is that of Napoleon at Auster. liiz, where he took 20,000 prisoners.— Ge❑. Grant at Vicksburg took 81,000. The spoil at Austerlitz was 160 pieces of artillery ; that at Vicksburg is set down at 269. THE Wool Grower and manufacturer, San Francisco, Cal., slates that hundreds of tons of coal are now furnished by the Mount Diable coal mines.
