Attempt to Seize tlie-New Alma-

Tie excitement of the day is found,in
the tattempt of the Government, to take
possession of the Almaden mine, and'the
consequent rumors which grew and multi
phed on the street. A writ dated the Sth
of May, and direoted to the marshal of
this district, arrived in this city a lew days
ago. It was issued by President Lincoln,
and commanded the marshal to aeiire the !
Almaden mine—and employ armedYorcel

Terrible Scene in a Bail Car. ;
, A London paper gives anarrative of a
terrible scene Which lately occurred in a
railroad car on the road from Liverpool to
London, where two passengers were at
tacked by a madman, and had a narrow
escape with their lives. The story is' as
follows:
Two travelers, a Mr. McLean and aMn
Wodand, took seats in a second class
carriage by the Friday night express from
Liverpool to London. In the same com
partment were a moody looking Irishman
and an elderlyivoman. The Irishman sat
by one'window, the woman near the other,
and the two men between. Until the
tram passed Blgtcbley the sedate passen
ger was hardly noticed by the others. I t
IB true that he had now and again talked
to himself somewhat fiercely, and seemed
to be thickening an invisible foe. Mr.
McLean and Mr. Worland glanced at him,
and then continued in triendly chat. Now
it so happened that the man had been
msane, and was rapidly growing insane

The market continues very active with a large
demand, especially lor crude and prices have ad
vanced a shade. The -took in first hands is not
large, whilst the receipts were barely sufficient
to meet thewnots of refiners.
At present no attention seems to be paid to the
New \orb market, as the rates current there
would not justify exporting. The price of freight
alone would be more than the difference. leaving
no mnrgin fur outside ox ponses-
